Amazon is Distorting Canadian Patent Law

Time to act!

Bezos gives lecture

Summary: Mr. Bezos continues his little crusade wherein he destroys other countries' legal systems so that he can get richer

FOR a variety of reasons we have published "boycott Amazon". Our wiki page gives more information as to why.

“Amazon's attack on software freedom by expansion of its outrageous patent monopolies should not be taken sitting down.”Now that Amazon does in north America what it was doing in the EU, Canadians need to get active on matters of patents, just as they were active (and enormously successful thus far) on the subject of copyrights. Amazon's attack on software freedom by expansion of its outrageous patent monopolies should not be taken sitting down. Professor Geist, who has fought against the export of US-style copyright law (Hollywood's wishlist) into Canada is already alerting his readers by pointing to a couple of articles [1, 2]. Amazon helps ratify Bilski-type patents and this is a facilitator of software patents in Canada, too.

As an aside, watch the following new report which (mis)uses words like "theft" and "stole" (or the likes of them) as applied to mere ideas implemented in software:

Sacramento, California - The California Attorney General's Office announced the arrest today of a con man who defrauded entrepreneurs by promising to help them secure patents on inventions ranging from sophisticated software to garden products but then stole their inventions and made thousands of dollars selling their patent rights.

Then they call him "thief of intellectual property" and talk about "patent protection" rather than "patent monopoly", which is really what this is. Software does not need "protection" beyond copyrights.

"I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and I fished out listings of their operating systems."
