it's always something...

I've discovered, through some mostly-unintentional experimentation, that it's
possible to cause master.debian.org to lock up tight while writing tape on the
DAT drive.  

I'm going to take the machine down for an hour or so this afternoon local time
to shuffle the SCSI cabling a bit, and see if that fixes the problem.  In the
meantime, feel free to work on the machine, as it's up and I promise not to
try writing another tape until I've found and fixed the problem...  :-)
