Chips_B_MalroyI believe the nuclear option of sueing for software patents has already happened, with both MS and Apple going after these companies that are using Android.  What this is really about is trying to use the legal system to stop any new operating systems from impacting the sales of their OS.Oct 02 01:24

ZiomatrixChips_B_Malroy: that way they are in the clear as far as not being a monopoly, but still making royalties thus cornering the market and making their shareholders happyOct 02 01:30

Chips_B_Malroysadly its for ubuntu and not upstreamOct 02 04:02
sebsebsebwell there is no upstream really for KDE 3 anymore?Oct 02 04:02
Chips_B_Malroywhich is another thing that causes people to dislike ubuntuOct 02 04:02
-TRIdentica/#techrights-[rsandu/@rsandu] @schestowitz M$ is falling from high altitude, it takes long... Oh, if regular people only stop giving them money out of fear... !Oct 02 04:03
Chips_B_Malroywhen they modify stuff to run on their already hacked ubuntu, it might not work upstreamOct 02 04:04
Chips_B_Malroylike kde3.5.11Oct 02 04:04

sebsebsebChips_B_Malroy: so last thing for our convo for me, was when I said that there isn't really an upstream for KDE 3 anymoreOct 02 04:09

sebsebsebKDE 3  was quite nice really, I sort of miss itOct 02 04:13
sebsebsebwell yeah I miss it a bitOct 02 04:13
*sebsebseb realy isn't much of a KDE 4 fan, but starting with 4.3 KDE 4 as a desktop environment would be useable enough for me to use without just going back to GnomeOct 02 04:13
sebsebsebwell with Mandriva that isOct 02 04:13
sebsebseband I mean by default as wellOct 02 04:14
sebsebsebKubuntu uh noOct 02 04:14
sebsebsebFirefox insatler in Kubuntu for example, what the?  and then still in menu for KDE or at least Gnome or both, when Firefox is on,  last time I tried KubuntuOct 02 04:14
oiaohmProblem with KDE 4.x is that is truely designed for a dri2 backed X11 server or better.Oct 02 04:15
sebsebsebanyway I think  the only two versions of Ubuntu that make proper sense are Ubuntu itself and Edubuntu,  anything else is pointless really I mean like Xubuntu and Lubuntu, because of other distrosOct 02 04:15
oiaohmLot of the older drivers have not been updated to that level.Oct 02 04:15
sebsebseband most distros based on Ubuntu are pretty pointless really, because of better distros :)Oct 02 04:15
oiaohmReally Ubuntu forks too much away from upstream.Oct 02 04:16

sebsebsebstuff like  Ubuntu Christian Edition and Satanic Edition and Ultimate edition and what not, all quite pointless reallyOct 02 04:16

oiaohmsebsebseb: KDE 3.5 using QT4 libs is officlaly called trinity desktop not KDE.Oct 02 04:20
sebsebseboiaohm: ok so thats a sort of fork, but not quiteOct 02 04:20
oiaohmBut Ubuntu guys don't respect that either.Oct 02 04:20
sebsebseboiaohm: not gone on the siteOct 02 04:21
oiaohmIts a full blown fork sebsebsebOct 02 04:21
oiaohmInternal code of KDE 3.5 has ben majorally altered to support QT4Oct 02 04:21
sebsebsebok KDE 3.5 like we know it, but with QT4 apps so its up to date?Oct 02 04:21
oiaohmQT3 and QT4 are not compadible.Oct 02 04:21
sebsebsebmaybe I should install something like that on real hardware :DOct 02 04:21
oiaohmtrinity keeps as much of the KDE 3.5 interface as able.Oct 02 04:22
oiaohmQT3 has major internal design flaws.  sebsebsebOct 02 04:22
oiaohmSo trinity funny enough is a smaller code base than full KDE 3.5Oct 02 04:23
Chips_B_Malroyso it cannot run both the QT4 apps and the old QT3 apps at the same time?Oct 02 04:23
-TRIdentica/#techrights-[rsandu/@rsandu] @schestowitz: The general public gives them money, out of IT ignorance or lack of options (such as the need for non-free CAD programs)Oct 02 04:23
sebsebseboiaohm: Trinity is form the guy that made  KDE 3 for later versions of Ubuntu, quite sure of it, when going on that pageOct 02 04:23
sebsebseboiaohm: and that would also explain why, they only seem to have versions for Ubuntu and DebianOct 02 04:24
oiaohmAgain they are not KDE 3 its ubuntu miss labeling.Oct 02 04:24
sebsebseboiaohm: it says fork on the pageOct 02 04:24
oiaohmQT4 and QT3 can run side by side.Oct 02 04:24
oiaohmProblem is KDE 3 and KDE 4 normally cannot.Oct 02 04:24
oiaohmDue to differences in file storage caused by QT4 and QT3 in configuration files.Oct 02 04:25
oiaohmtrinity removes issues like that.Oct 02 04:25
-TRIdentica/#techrights-[agentsmith/@agentsmith] @rsandu @schestowitz I guess this time M$'s going to have it: Motorola's not Tom Tom. They have patents on uProcessors and TelcoOct 02 04:25

sebsebseboiaohm: anyway yeah I should give trinity a try in Ubuntu 10.10 as well, when I put onOct 02 04:25
Chips_B_Malroy<oiaohm> trinity removes issues like that."  which might make it worthwhileOct 02 04:25
sebsebsebthe plan is to have all of this installed,  Ubuntu with their sucky Gnome patches, but I will customise a bit,  Xubuntu, Lubuntu,  Netbook interface Gnome and KDE,  and sure why not do Trinity as wellOct 02 04:26
oiaohmReally it would have helped if ubuntu and debian had called it what it was.Oct 02 04:26
sebsebsebreally it would have been great if it would run on other distros as well, but I suppouse they got to start some whereOct 02 04:27
sebsebsebmaybe someone will start a proper fork of Gnome 2 next year as wellOct 02 04:28
Chips_B_Malroylets see if it gets into upstream DebianOct 02 04:28
sebsebsebChips_B_Malroy: probaby not that likelyOct 02 04:28
oiaohmReally in time KDE 3.5 will fade.Oct 02 04:28
sebsebseboiaohm: which is the kind of thing I tried to say earlierOct 02 04:28
oiaohmKDE 4.x is getting far closer intergrations with QT 4.xOct 02 04:29
oiaohmSo code stack will thin.Oct 02 04:29
Chips_B_Malroydepends if kde4 will run on all the old hardware out there that it doesn't run on nowOct 02 04:29
Chips_B_Malroythe kde3.x didOct 02 04:29
sebsebsebright yeahOct 02 04:29
sebsebseband we may get a similar situationOct 02 04:29
sebsebsebwhen it comes to Gnome 2 and Gnome 3Oct 02 04:29
oiaohmKDE 4.5 runs on more hardware than the prior ones did.Oct 02 04:30
sebsebsebaltough I think the old look can be used with Gnome 3 under the hoodOct 02 04:30
Chips_B_Malroya lot of us do not have the newest hardware to work withOct 02 04:30
oiaohmMost of the KDE 4.x line has been reducing to lower requirements.Oct 02 04:30
sebsebsebChips_B_Malroy: indeedOct 02 04:30
oiaohmAlso part is galuim3d and others for dri2 support.Oct 02 04:31
oiaohmKDE 3.5 has a lot of in built software rendering.Oct 02 04:31
sebsebseboiaohm: whatever those areOct 02 04:31
oiaohmKDE 4.x expects the graphical system of the OS to provide.Oct 02 04:31
Chips_B_Malroywell something, either the kernels, Xorg versions, or KDE 4x is not running so well on the hardware i try it on, video problemsOct 02 04:31
oiaohmTranspanancy effects and so on KDE 3.5 can software render it self.  sebsebsebOct 02 04:32
sebsebseboiaohm: your saying KDE 3.5 doesn't really need xorg?Oct 02 04:32
oiaohmWhere KDE 4.x need X11 server todo it.Oct 02 04:32
oiaohmReally KDE 3.5 does not use hardware accleration either for those operations.Oct 02 04:32
oiaohmKDE 3.5 needs X11 but does not really attempt to take advantage of what  X11 offers sebsebsebOct 02 04:33
sebsebseboiaohm: oh okOct 02 04:33
sebsebseband yes I thought it needed xorgOct 02 04:33
oiaohmKDE 4.x trys to take advantage of what X11 servers should offer but if the X11 server not up to scratch opps hell.Oct 02 04:33
sebsebsebopps hell?Oct 02 04:34
sebsebsebif the xserver isn't good enough, problems with KDE 4Oct 02 04:34
sebsebsebthats what your saying?Oct 02 04:34
oiaohmXserver and drivers yes.Oct 02 04:34
sebsebseboh okOct 02 04:34
sebsebsebwell yeah ok theres thisOct 02 04:34
sebsebseb,butOct 02 04:35
sebsebsebfor meOct 02 04:35
sebsebsebKDE 3 is more user friendly as wellOct 02 04:35
sebsebseband probably for quite a lot of people as wellOct 02 04:35
sebsebsebKDE 4 is uhOct 02 04:35
-TRIdentica/#techrights-[agentsmith/@agentsmith] @rsandu BTW, U R from Romania ? We love Paula Mitrache here in Brazil! Hot BABE!!!Oct 02 04:35
oiaohmKDE from 4.0 to 4.4 also has not focused on memory optisationas and the like sebsebsebOct 02 04:35
oiaohmKDE 4.5 is the first to start working on memory usage optisations and read optimisations.Oct 02 04:36
Chips_B_MalroyI would have wished for KDE to have limited support for KDE3.5 for longer period of time.  I don't buy that they needed to just drop it.Oct 02 04:36
oiaohmSo yes KDE 4.5 is lighter on requirement than the past ones in the KDE 4.x line.Oct 02 04:36
oiaohmReally KDE 3.5 on QT 3 become unmaintainable.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 04:38
oiaohmKDE 4.0 was not rewritten from basically nothing for no good reason.Oct 02 04:38

oiaohmkde 4.5 is lighter than its past ones.Oct 02 04:41
oiaohmKde 4.6 will be lighter again.Oct 02 04:41
Chips_B_Malroybut consider that a lot of windows users always try linux on an older computer first, which works better on kde3.5 than 4x usuallyOct 02 04:41
oiaohmcenteral cache for icons kde 3.5 had.Oct 02 04:41

oiaohmKDE forcast the time for the X11 rewirte wrong.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 04:44
Chips_B_MalroyyesOct 02 04:44
oiaohmAnd the delays on that have made KDE 4.x line lot worse than thought it would be.Oct 02 04:45
oiaohmThe over memory usage has be another KDE 4.x head ache.Oct 02 04:45
Chips_B_Malroythey had the right idea, all I am saying is you don't have to throw out the old product which was kde3.5 and was doing well.  Just maintain it every so littleOct 02 04:45
oiaohmBut it was breaking up due to the X11 server updades.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 04:46
Chips_B_Malroybecause to me, clearly kde4x is not really seem like a continuation of kde3xOct 02 04:46
oiaohmThe very things that KDE 4.x need to work well leads to KDE 3.5 malfunctioning.Oct 02 04:46
Chips_B_Malroyah, ok, I see what you are saying now with X11Oct 02 04:47
Chips_B_Malroyalso I know drivers get dropped in some of the newer kernels as wellOct 02 04:47
Chips_B_Malroythe older driversOct 02 04:47
oiaohmits one of those rare rock and hard place.Oct 02 04:47
oiaohmolder drivers dropped because no one is maintaining them.Oct 02 04:48
oiaohmSo they are not updating to support what KDE 4 needs yep they work great with 3.5 because they are old and bit rotting stuff.Oct 02 04:48
oiaohmBasically is a zero win location unforntanly.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 04:49
Chips_B_Malroy"<oiaohm> So they are not updating to support what KDE 4 needs yep they work great with 3.5 because they are old and bit rotting stuff.Oct 02 04:49

Chips_B_Malroy"<oiaohm> So they are not updating to support what KDE 4 needs yep they work great with 3.5 because they are old and bit rotting stuff."  Ok, and thats why a lot of kde4 does not work on older hardware, especially laptops.  This R52 thinkpad with Intel video is not that old.Oct 02 04:50
oiaohmSo reducing cpu work and using more gpu.Oct 02 04:50
oiaohmHave a close look inside the intel drivers Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 04:51
oiaohmBig cases of bit rot and modern feature not being implemented yet.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 04:51
Chips_B_Malroyactually I have the same intel chipsets on my acer laptops and it works with kde4.3, go figureOct 02 04:51
oiaohmSome of the intel drivers are modern.Oct 02 04:51
-TRIdentica/#techrights-[rsandu/@rsandu] @schestowitz I use PythonCAD and qCAD, but for advanced, profesional AutoCAD users this is an area where GNU/Linux seriously lags behindOct 02 04:52
oiaohmSome have not seen a coder in 5 years.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 04:52
oiaohmOk some sections have not seen a coder in 5 years.Oct 02 04:52
oiaohmJust happens to be used in 5 year old hardware and brand new intel hardware.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 04:52
oiaohmSo yep sux majorally.Oct 02 04:52
Chips_B_Malroynot a problem of course if the 5 year old driver still worksOct 02 04:53
oiaohmThis case the 5 year old driver is a dog that should be taken out and shot.Oct 02 04:53
-TRIdentica/#techrights-[rsandu/@rsandu] @agentsmith Unfortunately, many Romanian artists are more known outside than in their own country...Oct 02 04:53

Chips_B_Malroythe Acer is a little newer, I admitt, althought the R52 is the better laptopOct 02 04:54
oiaohmIf you intel video card is still using a dri1 driver KDE is screwed.Oct 02 04:54
oiaohmIe KDE 4.x is screwed.Oct 02 04:54
Chips_B_Malroynot sure how to check thatOct 02 04:55
oiaohmRecently intel went to the extream of working out how to have KMS and keep the old dog dri1 drivers alive.Oct 02 04:55
Chips_B_Malroyat least the R52 has newer intel wireless chipset that worked todayOct 02 04:55
oiaohmTo expand the time they have to rewrite.Oct 02 04:55
oiaohmSo expanding the time we have to put up with hell from intel cards.Oct 02 04:56

-TRIdentica/#techrights-[rsandu/@rsandu] @schestowitz Traditionally, Romania is a country of WORKSTATION-only (IBM-compat PCs). In CAD, that leaves little alternative to AutoCADOct 02 04:57

Chips_B_Malroyno matter what you do to OpenOffice, there will always be people who complaign that its not enough compared to MS Office.  Its mostly they do now want to try something else as they are afraid they might have to learn something.Oct 02 05:13
Chips_B_MalroyinertiaOct 02 05:14
oiaohmReally openoffice has 3 major issues.Oct 02 05:14
Chips_B_Malroy"its too hard to move"Oct 02 05:14
oiaohmYou know MS Publisher.Oct 02 05:14
oiaohmIt provides you with great wisards for getting stuff done.Oct 02 05:14
Chips_B_Malroy3 is a lot less than the ones that MS office hasOct 02 05:14
oiaohmOpenOffice is rich in templates but very few wisards for documentation production exist.Oct 02 05:15
Chips_B_MalroyMS Publisher, I really do not known that well.  a friend of mine uses it that runs a printshopOct 02 05:15

oiaohmReally Scibus and Publisher don't match up.Oct 02 05:16
Chips_B_MalroyThe friend even converted to MacOct 02 05:16
oiaohmthey are two completely different levels of production tools.Oct 02 05:16
Chips_B_Malroynothing matches up with MS Publisher except for exporting to PDFOct 02 05:16
oiaohmScibus is closer to latex than what Publisher is.Oct 02 05:17
oiaohmPublisher is a heavly wisard driven beast.Oct 02 05:17
oiaohmTruefully we have nothing like it in open source.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 05:17
oiaohmI can point to a few free programs that are has heavly wisard driven as publisher Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 05:19
Chips_B_Malroyunfortunately, my experience in desktop publishing was mostly in PFS Publisher v3.0 (dos) and in Lotus Smartsuite which was a office suite, not MS PublisherOct 02 05:19
oiaohmPFS and Lotus are in the Scibus and Latex range of coverage.  Chips_B_MalroyOct 02 05:19
oiaohmSo yep to use Scibus would look fine to a MS pub user it will look like complete hard to use crap.Oct 02 05:20
Chips_B_Malroywhich is properly why I liked the look of ScibusOct 02 05:20

Chips_B_MalroyMS Publisher is more of a joke than a good desktop publishing toolOct 02 05:34
oiaohmThat is the point.Oct 02 05:34
oiaohmMS Publisher is basically MS word without the buges and good wizards.Oct 02 05:35

schestowitzIf anything, I think Apotheker will make HP more unfriendly to free software. It is really debatable why Hurd was ousted. I happen to think he is removed by Microsoft because he engaged HP in free software “too much”. Acquisitions of Palm and Phoenix Linux BIOS tech as well contributions to GNOME and Linux kernel put HP on Microsoft’s hit list. Microsoft declared HP a threat in SEC fillings. Now Apotheker comes from proprietaryOct 02 14:09
schestowitzcompany which is Microsoft ally. Make no mistake, SAP is enemy of free software. They feel the burn, and their business practices are incompatible with free software as much as Microsoft’s. SAP had a try when they released MaxDB under GPL, but they abandoned it after some time and continued supporting proprietary version. Since Apotheker lack experience with being a CEO (he was SAP CEO for only about a year) he will probably leaveOct 02 14:09
schestowitzlots decision making to his underlings. And chief of HP software division is a Microsoft guy, appointed right about after Palm acquisition.Oct 02 14:09
