prurigroDaemonFC: Yo, I'm looking for a quality, yet user friendly distro to setup on my step dad's box so he can run VMs ontop, would you recommend Fedora? and can you think of any reasons it might not be the best choice?Nov 24 19:20
DaemonFCFedora GNOME would probably have him throwing the computer out of the windowNov 24 19:21
DaemonFC:)Nov 24 19:21
DaemonFCFedora KDE is great if you have the system for it (most anything since 2005 or so runs it without a hitch)Nov 24 19:21
DaemonFCif it's old or a mobile system with low specs, XFCE and LXDE workNov 24 19:22
DaemonFCI prefer XFCE since it has a better window managerNov 24 19:22
DaemonFCamong other thingsNov 24 19:22
prurigrolol, their gnome build isn't the best?Nov 24 19:22
prurigroI was thinking more in the direction of kde or xfce tbhNov 24 19:22

prurigrobut yea, KDE seemed like the best choiceNov 24 19:23

prurigrooh I didn't know thatNov 24 19:27

DaemonFCso there is a lot of duplication, not as much code reuse, and lots of discrepancies Nov 24 19:27

DaemonFCwith a bunch of Ubuntu patchingNov 24 19:28

DaemonFCand the GTK+ version uses Compiz BrokenNov 24 19:28
DaemonFCB-)Nov 24 19:28
prurigrolike, gnome3 can be made much more similar to the way people want it via extensions, and KDE can be setup more tablet-oriented via extensions as well according to youNov 24 19:29
MinceRi preferred the desktop version of kde even on the netbookNov 24 19:29
prurigrobut I can't picture anything bringing unity to the way I'd want itNov 24 19:29
DaemonFCBluecurve was never as bad as UnityNov 24 19:29

prurigroso I haven't run into that issueNov 24 19:32
prurigrooh?Nov 24 19:32
DaemonFCbiggest difference is GTK's uses double clicksNov 24 19:32
DaemonFCwhile KDE's uses single clicks like its file managers doNov 24 19:32
DaemonFCkgtk-wrapper can fix thatNov 24 19:32
DaemonFCit was dropped from Fedora 16 though for lack of a maintainerNov 24 19:33

schestowitz[23:10] <Ziomatrix> schestowitz: I just have a hunch along with another user who posted in one of those threads that HP accounting maybe using it as an opportunity to cook the books to save shares from falling further. Perhaps this was Leo's plan all along. Also HP sent a satisfaction survey for the Touchpad (a canceled product) and alludes to a possible Windows 8 tablet in the near future: http://bit.ly/vF9DmlNov 24 23:26

Ziomatrixschestowitz: perhaps since it totals $2.865 billion in total WebOS gross losses, perhaps $3.3 billion is a result of further taxes and regulatory hurdles resulting in the total net operating loss. I still think its strange that HP still lost so much in R&D as it doesn't seem they laid out a roadmap past what Palm established. Nov 24 23:30
ZiomatrixAt least for XBox360 users they had to be semi-voluntarily conned Sony's PSN was not even secure and ever since Sony has been releasing patches that have done nothing more then making users accept an ever more draconian EULA and further rootkitting. Nov 24 23:34

Ziomatrixschestowitz: I only keep track of it because I have one of their products or at least inadvertently what they acquired. It seems that the Todd Bradley or the sole exec, who has not left or been fired for an alleged scandal, for continued internal support for WebOS is a mere voice in the wind. Even though he went onto Bloomberg, a popular financial media conglomerate founded by current NYC mayor: http://bloom.bg/vc6qOD toNov 24 23:49
ZiomatrixHP is flat out not going to drop support for WebOS. Perhaps rumors of him leaving the company are not as unfounded as one may think.Nov 24 23:49

Ziomatrixschestowitz: at least I think HP bombed the tablet market and exposed how overpriced these inflated touchscreen smartphones and PMPs really are.Nov 24 23:51
Ziomatrixactually a better description would be stretched as they stress keeping the form factor thin while many sacrifice connectivity and battery to do it. Nov 24 23:52
ZiomatrixI see people use these things in public transit in NYC among other places. Much of it for functions which certain phones can do just as well. It has become a 21st century equivalent in hipness and status to riding around with a boombox in the 1980s. With the detracted benefit of not even having a hi-fi device in any sort of way and unable to know what they're listening to, even if that could be a benefit.Nov 24 23:56
Ziomatrixwhile like boomboxes in the 1980s, Walkmen and other portables offered benefits to personal listening without disturbing anyway. I'm not certain though the fidelity in listening to a cassette through a boombox is that much different to a portable, there is base though. As for tablets these things don't have any difference or at least a minor one hardware as well as feature wise to their cellular counterparts. Nov 24 23:58
ZiomatrixIts obvious much of the market is dumbing down much of computing towards the average userNov 24 23:59
