schestowitzHave you seen https://git.skyjake.fi/skyjake (lagrange dev)? unlike gitlab, gitea is not "open core" and we can use it to publish bits of the git repo (one by one, not sure how the process goes). I think it can help convince more people to self-host. gitea itself still needs to get off GH.Aug 23 11:47
schestowitzMaybe steep learning curve managing it, but kaniini can help, wants to learn it too; apline and others chased by gitlab (the company) for free [sic[ "eneterprise", which they turned down (free trap).Aug 23 11:47
-TechrightsBN/#boycottnovell-git.skyjake.fi | Jaakko Keränen - GiteaAug 23 11:47
schestowitzI think it would be educational and a valuable skill (self-hosting git and webui for it), seeing that git is likely to stay another 10 years... something will then replace it as per the usual cycles. I wanted to ask this earlier, forgot what it was, then it came back to me after 10 minutes thinking.Aug 23 11:47
schestowitzGitea might not be best, but from what I can gather it looks nice and has no traps in it. There are also gogs and others, forks of it IIRC. Gitea has planned for years to leave GH, but it is not happening yet... maybe network effect being a factor.Aug 23 11:47
schestowitzIt feels too much like github copycat: https://git.skyjake.fi/skyjake/the_Foundation but maybe that can easr people transition away from GHAug 23 11:47

Techrights-secI'm fine with it as long as it is FOSS through and through and hasAug 23 11:50
Techrights-secno connections to M$ or its minions.Aug 23 11:50
schestowitzin terms of site focus, i think oliva joins us in advancing solutions to borader issues, e.g. irc self-hosting gemini git dweb copyleft antimonopoly k.i.s.s. etc. those things do matter to many people and ought to matter to more who aren't even recognising the problems yetAug 23 11:50
schestowitzI am trying to think how else to promote gemini without becoming too pushy. one think we can already do it add to daily IRC posts the analogous gemini URLs (like we do IPFS), then do the same in the log files themselves. The bulletins already contain gemini URLs, IPFS cashes, but they are not self-referential.Aug 23 11:50
Techrights-secSetting some kind of publishing hook to trigger a Gemini update at theAug 23 11:55
Techrights-secsame time that a HTTP story is published would help.Aug 23 11:55
schestowitz-TRdoing that manually is only a few clicksAug 23 11:56
Techrights-secYes, but it must be remembered. ;)Aug 23 11:57
schestowitz-TRthe incentive to do a manual run will grows as more people access TR that way. I have just asked kaniini about gitea.Aug 23 11:57

Techrights-secHow much overhead is there for a fresh, empty container?Aug 23 12:12
Techrights-sec^system overheadAug 23 12:12
schestowitzI am not sure but I do know it would be wise to make a backup of the IRC container, which lacks basic tools like rsync. The server will also travel soon and IP address may change.Aug 23 12:13
schestowitzyesterday while recording the video I noticed that img in gemini gets converted into quoted text only in certain scenarios but not others. I think the pattern it scans for might be very unique.Aug 23 12:26
Techrights-secOk.  I can look at the conversion but need a positive example and a negativeAug 23 13:18
Techrights-secexample to compare and go through the work flow.  Aug 23 13:18
schestowitzI think it depends on whether thw image is also a link to itself)Aug 23 13:19
schestowitzI have begun making a habit out of running the script after new posts, seeing that today is another ~6000 reqs day and rising over time. Can you figure out the pattern by which gemini equivalents of IRC logs ae creted around 3:30am each morning and maybe add that to the template of IRC posts?Aug 23 15:41
Techrights-secI'll check.Aug 23 15:56
Techrights-secAt 6 past every third hour, the script gemini-cron-updater.sh gets runAug 23 16:27
Techrights-secIf the IRC logs have been posted then they get read from the RSS feed Aug 23 16:27
Techrights-secjust like any other post.  Aug 23 16:27
Techrights-secThat seems to work well.  What change did you have in mind?Aug 23 16:27
Techrights-secIf I add something at this point I then like to take something out, Aug 23 16:27
Techrights-secso that the processes do not get too complex or interdependent.Aug 23 16:27
schestowitzI know what you mean. What I had in mind was, the blog posts (WordPress) can point to the gemini version of the text file, e.g.  gemini://gemini.techrights.org/tr_text_version/irc-log-techrights-220821.txt (I think it should be as simple as just prepending " gemini://gemini.techrights.org/tr_text_version/"Aug 23 16:29
Techrights-secThat is easy to implement.Aug 23 16:32
schestowitz-TRwould that be worth adding as an option? At the very lease raises awareness. I can also add those as links to the html versions of the logs.Aug 23 16:33
Techrights-secOk, I've added a gemini link generator, but it is slightly fragile.  Aug 23 16:42
Techrights-secIt depends on the link always being 'today' and the IRC log always beingAug 23 16:42
Techrights-sec'yesterday'.   If a day is missed and the logs have get added a day orAug 23 16:42
Techrights-secmore late, then the Gemini link will have to be hand edited.  :/  Aug 23 16:42
schestowitz-TRwith corona still unsolved problem, I've not slept (overnight) away for 2 years and even if I did, this is cronned, so from my end it ought to work okAug 23 16:43
schestowitz-TRI did program the scripts to be able to generate several days' worth. usimg an optional loop, but I've not had to do that in yearsAug 23 16:44
Techrights-secThis part is all dependent on manual intervention to post the IRC logs to Aug 23 16:48
Techrights-secWordPress.  If that could be automated, then it would be far more reliableAug 23 16:48
Techrights-secand robust.  However, when I looked around I could not find a simple method.Aug 23 16:48
Techrights-secSuggestions?Aug 23 16:48
schestowitz-TRthere used to be a way by xmlrpc, but I never looked into it. I'm now incorporating a gemini link into html logs files.Aug 23 16:48

schestowitz-TRIn my homedir on this pi I've put two binaries for telescope. They're not armv7 so I never expected them to run, but maybe you wish to copy them to your laptops and use these instead of amfora for a bit?Aug 23 22:58
