I think it can help convince more people to self-host. gitea itself still needs to get off GH. [11:47] schestowitz Maybe steep learning curve managing it, but kaniini can help, wants to learn it too; apline and others chased by gitlab (the company) for free [sic[ "eneterprise", which they turned down (free trap). [11:47] -TechrightsBN/#boycottnovell-git.skyjake.fi | Jaakko Kernen - Gitea [11:47] schestowitz I think it would be educational and a valuable skill (self-hosting git and webui for it), seeing that git is likely to stay another 10 years... something will then replace it as per the usual cycles. I wanted to ask this earlier, forgot what it was, then it came back to me after 10 minutes thinking. [11:47] schestowitz Gitea might not be best, but from what I can gather it looks nice and has no traps in it. There are also gogs and others, forks of it IIRC. Gitea has planned for years to leave GH, but it is not happening yet... maybe network effect being a factor. [11:47] schestowitz It feels too much like github copycat: https://git.skyjake.fi/skyjake/the_Foundation but maybe that can easr people transition away from GH [11:47] -TechrightsBN/#boycottnovell-git.skyjake.fi | skyjake/the_Foundation: Opinionated C11 library for low-level functionality - the_Foundation - Gitea [11:50] Techrights-sec I'm fine with it as long as it is FOSS through and through and has [11:50] Techrights-sec no connections to M$ or its minions. [11:50] schestowitz in terms of site focus, i think oliva joins us in advancing solutions to borader issues, e.g. irc self-hosting gemini git dweb copyleft antimonopoly k.i.s.s. etc. those things do matter to many people and ought to matter to more who aren't even recognising the problems yet [11:50] schestowitz I am trying to think how else to promote gemini without becoming too pushy. one think we can already do it add to daily IRC posts the analogous gemini URLs (like we do IPFS), then do the same in the log files themselves. The bulletins already contain gemini URLs, IPFS cashes, but they are not self-referential. [11:55] Techrights-sec Setting some kind of publishing hook to trigger a Gemini update at the [11:55] Techrights-sec same time that a HTTP story is published would help. [11:56] schestowitz-TR doing that manually is only a few clicks [11:57] Techrights-sec Yes, but it must be remembered. ;) [11:57] schestowitz-TR the incentive to do a manual run will grows as more people access TR that way. I have just asked kaniini about gitea. ● Aug 23 [12:00] Techrights-sec The update script can even be run from 'at' if delay is needed. [12:12] Techrights-sec ^system overhead [12:13] schestowitz I am not sure but I do know it would be wise to make a backup of the IRC container, which lacks basic tools like rsync. The server will also travel soon and IP address may change. [12:26] schestowitz yesterday while recording the video I noticed that img in gemini gets converted into quoted text only in certain scenarios but not others. I think the pattern it scans for might be very unique. ● Aug 23 [13:18] Techrights-sec Ok. I can look at the conversion but need a positive example and a negative [13:18] Techrights-sec example to compare and go through the work flow. [13:19] schestowitz I think it depends on whether thw image is also a link to itself) ● Aug 23 [15:41] schestowitz I have begun making a habit out of running the script after new posts, seeing that today is another ~6000 reqs day and rising over time. Can you figure out the pattern by which gemini equivalents of IRC logs ae creted around 3:30am each morning and maybe add that to the template of IRC posts? [15:56] Techrights-sec I'll check. ● Aug 23 [16:27] Techrights-sec At 6 past every third hour, the script gemini-cron-updater.sh gets run [16:27] Techrights-sec If the IRC logs have been posted then they get read from the RSS feed [16:27] Techrights-sec just like any other post. [16:27] Techrights-sec That seems to work well. What change did you have in mind? [16:27] Techrights-sec If I add something at this point I then like to take something out, [16:27] Techrights-sec so that the processes do not get too complex or interdependent. [16:29] schestowitz I know what you mean. What I had in mind was, the blog posts (WordPress) can point to the gemini version of the text file, e.g. gemini://gemini.techrights.org/tr_text_version/irc-log-techrights-220821.txt (I think it should be as simple as just prepending " gemini://gemini.techrights.org/tr_text_version/" [16:32] Techrights-sec That is easy to implement. [16:33] schestowitz-TR would that be worth adding as an option? At the very lease raises awareness. I can also add those as links to the html versions of the logs. [16:42] Techrights-sec Ok, I've added a gemini link generator, but it is slightly fragile. [16:42] Techrights-sec It depends on the link always being 'today' and the IRC log always being [16:42] Techrights-sec 'yesterday'. If a day is missed and the logs have get added a day or [16:42] Techrights-sec more late, then the Gemini link will have to be hand edited. :/ [16:43] schestowitz-TR with corona still unsolved problem, I've not slept (overnight) away for 2 years and even if I did, this is cronned, so from my end it ought to work ok [16:44] schestowitz-TR I did program the scripts to be able to generate several days' worth. usimg an optional loop, but I've not had to do that in years [16:48] Techrights-sec This part is all dependent on manual intervention to post the IRC logs to [16:48] Techrights-sec WordPress. If that could be automated, then it would be far more reliable [16:48] Techrights-sec and robust. However, when I looked around I could not find a simple method. [16:48] Techrights-sec Suggestions? [16:48] schestowitz-TR there used to be a way by xmlrpc, but I never looked into it. I'm now incorporating a gemini link into html logs files. [16:51] schestowitz find the plain text version at this address (HTTP) or in Gemini.

[16:58] schestowitz > echo gemini://gemini.techrights.org/tr_text_version/irc-log-230821.txt | sed "s/TEXTVERSIONGEMINI/gemini:\/\/gemini.techrights.org\/tr_text_version\/${IRCDATESLUG}.txt/" [16:58] schestowitz > done [16:58] schestowitz Processing Aug 22 [16:58] schestowitz Full date: Sunday, August 22, 2021 [16:58] schestowitz Slug: 220821 [16:58] schestowitz gemini://gemini.techrights.org/tr_text_version/220821.txt ● Aug 23 [17:14] schestowitz this address (HTTP) or in Gemini (how to use Gemini).
