TODAY'S latest twist [1, 2] is a glimmer of hope for Mr. Assange, but it does not mean liberation. Assange remains locked up for reasons nobody can convincingly explain and his legal bills will continue to grow as he fights for survival, either in defiance of an execution or a de facto death sentence behind bars. Time is working against him, not for him. Legal staff of the US Government has virtually infinite resources, not to mention connections.
Assange needs to be freed. If that ever happens, it'll be a cause for collective relief. His freedom will signal to other journalists, especially those who speak truth to power or expose leaks about power, that it is safe to operate in the UK and that "Big Brother" USA does not govern the entire globe with its notorious "espionage" law (targeting people who expose crimes rather than those who commit crimes).
Even those who cannot or do not understand what Assange does (or don't do anything remotely like Wikileaks) are impacted because a democratic, properly-functioning society depends on other people's ability to expose misconduct, corruption, even war crimes.
This cruelty needs to end. █
