Evolution of Hype
Passing fads and rebranding
At first there was promise
Servers that render graphics
Then there were workstations
Then SGI exodus resulted in NVIDIA, ATI etc.
Then they had GPUs for workstations
AMD bought ATI
Intel became bloat with "integrated graphics"
GPUs lacked a purpose (other than gaming and niche markets)
They offered all sorts of accelerations (e.g. video processing)
From OpenGL they turned to CL
And then they advertised the GPUs as "get rich fast" schemes, e.g. "crypto" mining
Failing that, they now market the same garbage as "AI" chips
Sure, those are just GPUs with a different marketing slant
Accelerators and directives aren't new, the hype is
