Google Promoting Slop, Not Journalism

posted by Roy Schestowitz on Feb 14, 2026

If Google does enough to 'punish' real news sites, will they be gone and Google dominate with its slop ventures?

We've attempted quite hard to find new examples of LLM slop about "linux" (GNU/Linux), but there's definitely not enough for a "Slopwatch" installment anymore. This year is different and mostly better than the last. Many sites that experimented with slop aren't active anymore or stopped their experiments.

In RSS feeds we've only found LibreOffice slop from Linux Journal, once upon a time a real news site:

Slop or fake: LibreOffice 26.2 Arrives: Faster Performance, Sharper UI, and Better Compatibility

It's not about "linux" per se, but the name of the site contains "linux".

Google News now feeds this prolific slopfarm which targets "linux":

Slop or fake: Five Linux Distros Emerge As Ready To Use Picks

Slop or fake: Linux Mint Signals Slower Release Cadence

How on Earth can Google not "see" that this is a slopfarm? It's just so darn obvious.

The truth of the matter is, Google is part of this problem and it doesn't seem to care. It also links to the above from Linux Journal, but at least historically Linux Journal was a real news site.
