We Need More Encryption, Not Less of It
In the news: MI5 and police illegally grabbed journalist’s call records to find sources
A year ago there was a terror attack against a synagogue in Manchester (hard to forget when "hired guns" working for Americans attack you on the same day, just minutes apart, knowing your lawyer is a Jewish man from Manchester). Some media in the UK now tries to take advantage of it to talk against encryption. Links omitted by intention.
In other news (above): "Former BBC Northern Ireland journalist paid £20,000 in damages by MI5 and PSNI." That makes one wonder where the country stands on whistleblowers or mere sources, who simply expect privacy when communicating with reporters.
Meanwhile in the US, according to the New York Times "U.S. Withdraws Subpoenas Issued to New York Times Journalists" and this too had to go to court:
A federal judge raised questions about the government’s handling of the subpoenas, which The Times called an attempt to intimidate the free press.
Obama did this to James Risen (same paper) and even nearly sent him to prison for refusing to name his source, which was discovered regardless (Sterling).
Don't ever expect the state to respect privacy (it works against it and the British legal system outsources almost everything to Microsoft/NSA/GAFAM, even in cases implicating Microsoft). Use Free software and use encryption to ensure sources are fully protected. █
