  Overall, I find Mandriva Linux One Spring 2008 to be a very cohesive distro. I lament the fact that most of the major distros have given KDE second-class status and focus most of their development and utilities for Gnome. For example, in Fedora with KDE, I still need to launch the GTK program Pup to update my packages.

  The preview model that we looked at felt well polished. The Aspire One's plastic superstructure seemed a bit less rugged than the MSI Wind's, but this mini-laptop has a great keyboard.

  What you're seeing there is a Plasma workspace with 5 activities (aka "desktop Containments") zoomed out so that you can see them all. The third one in the top row is a folderview. folderview, you see, is both an Applet as well as a Containment; in fact all Containments are also Applets. This purposeful design decision allows one to repurpose certain applets as "things that cover my screen" or "things that appear in a panel" (to name but two possibilities).

The BECTA Scam

  If you are a school, ignore Becta's project, ignore Becta, and seek advice from the people who are able to give it. Any of the organisations Becta rejected will be your best choice.
  
  If you are a member of the Open Source community or industry not yet touched by this scandal, boycott the project and refuse to have anything to do with it. It's not about 'Open Source', it's about jobs for the boys, spin, and discrediting non-proprietary software.
  
  If you are anyone else, throw your hands up in despair at yet more political sleaze, cronyism and incompetence, and vote for someone other than the current government at the next election, preferably someone with policies on Open Source and Open Government.
