Upgrading IRCd
THE other day we rebooted the server after about 3-4 months (remember the backport bug in ext4?) because of another kernel update and then began testing the latest version of the IRC daemon, Ergo (formerly known as Oragono, old manual here). The downtime lasted less than 1 minute (for Gemini and HTTP/S). We took notes and brought IRC back up. Thankfully we now have the luxury of time and can make better use of it. IRC predates the Web and, given the deterioration of the Web, it is still - increasingly - better than the Web (unless thoroughly filtered for quality).
We use the latest Debian BTW.
IRC remains our most important collaboration and communication tool. Some time very soon it'll be 16 years since we started using it in this site (using Freenode, which we'll cover soon; we left it 3 years ago in June). In a few weeks we turn 17.5 and 8 weeks from now the sister site turns 20. Good times. █
