Deny the Shopping Holiday, Celebrate the Real Holiday
We do not celebrate Thanksgiving here, but last night my alarm clock woke me up at the top of the hour and only played commercials (probably bad time to set a radio alarm to). A lot of them were "Deny Friday" (they use a racist word for it; I cannot say it here) despite us not having Thanksgiving here. This past Sunday I saw a large billboard on the road - a very busy read - saying it was Deny Friday WEEK. Yes, week. Friday is apparently a whole week now, so we must shop. Till we drop. Or something....
Thanksgiving should not involve "selfies" and "likes". To many people, Thanksgiving and Fridays are days of rest, not shopping.
As a matter of principle, despite going out every Friday to one of the local diners, we decided to move that to Thursday. So we're going out today. We won't be purchasing anything this Deny Friday. Two weeks ago Dr. Andy Farnell wrote about Buy Nothing Day. Dr. Farnell's articles are always good. █
