Richard Stallman Will Speak in Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress
His page does not disclose this yet, nor does this one: (official site)
Just a few days ago we mentioned that Stallman was sceptical of things like Ethereum, quoting a recent talk of his. Nevertheless, he seems to have accepted an invitation to speak later this year in Buenos Aires. There are about 30 comments in Twitter ("X") and they seem positive, the majority of them at least.
The FSF's Greg Farough has meanwhile published a blog post in advance of the FSF's 40-year anniversary. It mentions Richard Stallman by name several times.
"GNU's 40th anniversary is coming up," one person told us, pointing to early October. He said that "perhaps a long form post can be worked out quietly in advance preparation and published on the anniversary?"
I said they "will have their own" (referring to the FSF), sensing it would seem inadequate or impolite to take attention away from their own messaging.
After some further discussion we decided it would be OK to cover themes we're good at covering. As I "was 3 when the FSF started, I have no inside stories," I told him, unlike some people in the FSF's Board, "but something focusing on software patents might complement the focus of the main announcement(s)," I was told.
So we've begun working on it. While it's true we have "no inside story [...] there has been a lot of overlap in goals between TR [Techrights] and FSF as far as I can tell."
We have some exclusive FSF stories here for future years (it's not suitable time to publish them until the litigation is all over [1, 2, 3]), but nothing about the foundation of the Foundation. I was too young to learn of know anything.
Anyway, it's good to see that the FSF pays considerable respect to it founder, who is moreover invited to speak at events. Many people will attend his talk in Argentina and he can take questions in both English and Spanish. He'll probably focus on Software Freedom rather than anything 'crypto'-related. The founder of Ethereum repeatedly mentioned Stallman over the years and said good things about him (we reproduced some videos about this). For sure he was inspired by Stallman's vision. █
