statCounter Cannot 'See' Chinese Operating Systems That Gain Many Millions of Users Per Month
Earlier this month we published a number of detailed articles about an Achilles heel of statCounter; it does not recognise quite a lot of operating systems at all. It just tosses them under "Unknown". Yesterday there was an an article about HarmonyOS at It's FOSS (spotted by the sister site) and it said, citing an official with access to telemetry, that "HarmonyOS has been on more than 55 million devices, adding 23 million in just under six months, which is a massive number for sure. Market giants who wish to maintain their monopoly have every reason to be worried about the competition."
There is no way for statCounter to recognise or show the market share of HarmonyOS, so let's assume "Unknown" is definitely not Windows.
There are many nations, e.g. Colombia and Ethiopia this month, where statCounter observes a Windows all-time low.
Might we assume that it is replaced not only by Android and GNU/Linux but also all those "niche" operating systems that aren't so niche anymore? █
