The State of Slopfarms About "Linux" in August 2026

Slop or fake: Mozilla says your open source AI might not be as open as you think

Less than a year ago we quit doing "Slopwatch". We said that by the end of 2026 it seemed likely many slopfarms would already be dead, de-indexed, de-ranked etc. So far this prediction has been somewhat good, not perfect. I want to explain why.

At the moment I keep observing about 6 sites (an everyday exhaustive check) I know to be slopfarms or mostly LLM slop. Some of them are inactive, none went offline, and in some cases activity waned considerably. I decided to no longer name those sites (they have "linux" in their domain name) as naming them may lead to people visiting them. Starving slopfarms is very important; they throw in the towel faster if nobody visits them.

There are several ways by which slopfarms can be 'killed': 1) search engines like Google cull them (e.g. de-list them); 2) the supplier of slop (images and text) goes offline or adds some paywall/fees because there is no viable business model; 3) the operator loses interest; 4) the sponsors cuts off funding, so it means the slopfarm becomes stale and/or goes offline (points 1-3 can be contributing factors).

Let's see how many slopfarms (we focus on ones that claim to 'cover' Linux but engage in a form of plagiarism) can survive 'til Christmastime.

What seems abundantly clear is that social control media is drowned/overwhelmed by slop (a subject of criticism and growing concern) and it drives away real participation. As a result, some social control media networks call it quits. Those issues (this and the slopfarms) are intertwined). You cannot sell ads to bots!

The Web needs serious cleanup, which curation can help deliver. █
