DaemonFCI'm glad our government is so well off that it can afford to lose money so people can donate to this.Sep 22 11:18
DaemonFCThere's plenty of Republicans living downstate. They'd leave, but the welfare checks are not as good in other states, so they stay here. Plus there's the usual cadre of landlords, lawyers, and other parasites. The rich ones who manage to create nothing, just stick a big straw into the working class and suck money out of them and claim to be "job creators".Sep 22 11:22
DaemonFCThink of a landlord as a big buzzing mosquito.Sep 22 11:22
DaemonFCIt lands on you and sticks its beak in and sucks blood out and then goes to lay its eggs.Sep 22 11:23
DaemonFCIf you complain, it will remind you of that one time 8 months ago when it sent some guy over to fix pipes that it owns in an apartment it would have to rent to someone else if it told you to leave.Sep 22 11:23

DaemonFC"My mom, who voted for Trump, probably couldn't. She doesn't even understand the basic concept that Congress passes laws. She's always going "Well, if Biden's so great, then why doesn't he just sign a law that...." and I have to say, "Well, mother, you see, we have a bicameral legislature called Congress and they have to do that, and then the president signs or vetoes the bill, and if he signs it, it becomes the law, and if it becomes the law, Sep 22 11:53

DaemonFCSome of the ACA was actually better planned out than it looked. Trump cut off "Cost Sharing Reduction" payments to insurers, figuring that the sabotage would make the health insurance plans in most states less affordable and people would respond by dropping their insurance.Sep 22 11:57
DaemonFCThen what actually happened was bigger direct subsidy payments were triggered at the individual policy level, and many low income households got cheaper or even $0 premiums.Sep 22 11:58
DaemonFCIf your insurance goes from a couple hundred bucks a month to like $50, do you drop it? I mean, that's literally how ridiculous this guy was. He had no head for policy. DaemonFCschestowitz-TR, I spent quite a while fixing up a copy of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to work in Wine on my other laptop.Sep 22 12:27

DaemonFCIt's sad.Sep 22 12:31
DaemonFCGTA V, even 8 years later, feels like a complete game at least.Sep 22 12:31
DaemonFCIt plays better. The graphics haven't aged _that_ badly.Sep 22 12:31
DaemonFCThey did a lot of optimizations to the game code, even to the point of making it work acceptably on the XBOX 360.Sep 22 12:32
DaemonFCI'd say that the 360 version was the most deficient, but they didn't have to cut too much out of it.Sep 22 12:33
DaemonFCNo first person mode inside a car, smaller soundtrack, the graphics have jaggies sometimes but not in a way that is a huge distraction.Sep 22 12:33
DaemonFCBut these companies with the DRM are ruining the PC as a gaming platform. Rockstar decided that they'd put numerous requirements in there that basically ruin the game if you don't go online to ping one of their servers, which checks your license.Sep 22 12:34
DaemonFCThen some of the single player missions become pointless and you can't get enough cash to finance the final missions. So it's not really possible to complete the game, as intended, offline.Sep 22 12:35
DaemonFCThe whole point of the "assassination missions" are to kill people and play the in game stock market (which pings a real web server) and if you don't have it connected for it to verify your copy of the game, you can't really do much in-game because you're supposed to have made a bunch of money and can't.Sep 22 12:36

DaemonFCCanonical has a very nasty habit of implementing bug workarounds that apply to something else they've patched higher up the stack.Sep 22 12:47
DaemonFCWith app indicators, they were patching out systray support from applcations that had it, and then the other desktops had to implement "indicators" too, even though it was stupid.Sep 22 12:47
DaemonFCBecause Kubuntu did it where there was an App Indicators systray applet.Sep 22 12:48
DaemonFCSo some things loaded in the systray, while others loaded in the App Indicators systray applet, and there was this whole extra level and you never knew where anything would actually put its icon at.Sep 22 12:48

kingoffrance:/  well its kind of devolved into idiocy  https://www.forbes.com/uk/advisor/investing/nft-non-fungible-token/  Physical money and cryptocurrencies are “fungible,” meaning they can be traded or exchanged for one another.          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fungibility  Fungibility refers only to the equivalence and indistinguishability of each unit of a commodity with other units of the same commodity    or example, gold is fungible since Sep 22 13:42

kingoffrancewhat i heard its more "divisibility"Sep 22 13:42
gustafNFTs are just an attempt to shoehorn "collectibility" into craptoSep 22 13:43
kingoffrancequote wiki:   Notably, money is fungible: one US $10 banknote is interchangeable with any other genuine banknote like it.[4] It is also interchangeable with two fives, ten ones, or any other combination of banknotes and coins adding up to $10.  ;  this is 1/2 truth, because if you cut a dollar bill in half, its not worth 50 cents, its worth 0 and you debased itSep 22 13:45
kingoffrancehence why i heard it was "divisibility"Sep 22 13:45
kingoffranceand why people who like precious metal, might not consider paper to be "fungible" unless e.g. there is some way to divide it like thatSep 22 13:46
kingoffrancehence the "exchange a $10 note for 2 $5 bills"Sep 22 13:47
gustafcrypto in general is divisible Sep 22 13:48
gustafstack those sats! Sep 22 13:48
gustafbut a NFT by definition is not Sep 22 13:48
kingoffrancequote Fungibility has been used to describe certain types of tasks that can be broken down into interchangeable pieces that are easily parallelized and are not interdependent on the other pieces.Sep 22 13:50
kingoffrancethat is actually good, because a process can be parallelizable or notSep 22 13:50
kingoffrancei mean, broadly can be applied to computing tooSep 22 13:50
kingoffrancequote forbes "one Bitcoin is always equal to another Bitcoin"  thats not wrong, its just can you e.g. divide smaller, into bitcoin dust?   strictly, sometimes "fungibility" people want thatSep 22 13:52
kingoffrancei dont know anything, but have to be specific to avoid sleight of handSep 22 13:52
gustafevery btc transaction is immutably recorded onto a public ledger, so there's definite risk involved in touching coins that have been known to have been "stolen" (actually - accessed without the previous holder of the private keys' permission)Sep 22 13:55
gustafcoins can be "blacklisted" too Sep 22 13:55
kingoffranceim sure theres some proper term for "smallest unit" ?Sep 22 13:56

kingoffranceand perhaps an upper limit tooSep 22 13:57

AdmFubarI thin he should talk more and dig himself deeperSep 22 22:42
activelowwho was it to decide? BG was heading towards *nix iirc, Xenix, instead OpenVMS clone (WinNT) was enforcedSep 22 22:43
activelowit probably was IBM againSep 22 22:44
activelowmaybe, IBM was thinking, to serve business with their AIX, and microsoft focused on OpenVMS/WinNT instead for consumers and small businessSep 22 22:46
activelowand then, this mutated into the horrendous beast Wintel IBM PCSep 22 22:46
activeloweven without Windows, the remaining Lintel IBM PC remains in place, regardless of some GNU herded on top of this platformSep 22 22:47
