GNU/Linux Grows in Denmark, But Much of That is ChromeOS, Which Means No Freedom
THIS next article deals with these numbers (ODF) from statCounter. Like in Sweden, Denmark seems to fancy Chromebooks.
It's good that many Danes stopped using Windows, but will they be in control of their PCs?
The same can be asked about Android users, not just ChromeOS adopters.
Google never designs operating systems with freedom in mind. At one point it even tried to replace Linux, probably because of the GPL. It didn't work. The staff trying to pull that off got reassigned or laid off.
Having gained adoption by semi-openwashing with AOSP, Google is tightening the screws and, as of this month, even censors for China, even in Hong Kong! This has nothing to do with security. It's about asserting full control over users - what they do, what they think etc.
"This one has some details I haven't seen elsewhere," an associate told me an hour ago. "The mislabel of 'sideloading' is being further abused to extend the app store monopoly and shut out competitors, among other things."
That's about Android, not iOS. Google is becoming more like Apple and Microsoft, having employed sleazy Microsofters by the thousands (over 12,000!), except Google uses the Linux kernel. The same is true for Chromebooks.
As Thomas Grzybowski put it in 2020, "Free Software Freedom is Not Linux". █
