"Austria’s military switches from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice," says this new blog post. It would not be the first NATO army to abandon Microsoft for perfectly good reasons (recall Open Document Format (ODF) Adopted by NATO). Quoting the blog: "The initial plan to move to LibreOffice was formed in 2020, and detailed planning and training of internal developers for improvements began in 2022. In 2023, a company in Germany was contracted to provide technical support and additional development."

"The Austrian military’s migration reflects a growing demand for independence from single vendors. With free and open source software like LibreOffice, anyone can study and modify the source code to make improvements specifically for their setup and workflow. Government bodies and organisations can free themselves from vendor lock-in, spending taxpayer’s money on local companies to provide support and further development – rather than paying for license fees from overseas companies."

Meanwhile Microsoft will continue implementing (while trying to hide) endless waves of mass layoffs. We've heard that under the guise of "relocation" Microsoft now causes many people to resign/leave, something like, "you need to apply internally for another position (if any exists at all and isn't reserved for low-paid visa applicants!) or lose the job when your unit shuts down" (it's an HR trick).

That's aside from RTO - same trick as seen in IBM, the EPO, and many other companies. Compelling people to leave in anger means they don't get paid and it's not called "layoffs".

Microsoft will distract from this using outright lies. It'll name-drop "AI" as an excuse, but the real reasons are in the real data, for instance: Austrian GNU/Linux Usage Up to About 5% as More of Europe Abandons Microsoft
