TLS 1.3 Dominates Geminispace (99% of Known Capsules)
When Gemini Protocol was born in 2019 TLS 1.2 was still widely used. When we embraced Gemini Protocol and joined Geminispace TLS 1.2 was still used by almost 20% of capsules. Today, in 2025, Lupa indicates that "99 % of the capsules [which it knows about] use TLS 1.3, 1 % use TLS 1.2."
We previously wrote about the differences between those two versions; TLS 1.2 is "old", but many domains still use it [1, 2]. Last year we cited this article on why TLS certificates were (almost) never particularly well verified and months later we gave another example of that - a subject we had already covered here before.
The bottom line is, it's nowadays safe to assume almost every capsule can handle TLS 1.3. This was not the case half a decade ago.
People who say "Gemini Protocol" is "like old" are missing the point. Gemini Protocol is very new; it's light and simple, not old. █
