Microsoft-controlled Restricted ('Secure')
Boot remains a problem. It has been a problem for 1.5 decades
already. And yet, the media seldom even mentions it,
except when there's yet another critical hole. The media
would also habitually mention that this impacts voting machines, as
we showed in the
previous part. So why are we tolerating it? Because it's "old
news". The problem is still a problem, even if it's "old".
People did not stop campaigning against the practice of slavery
because:
- "Slavery was and old problem"
- "This was inevitable"
- "There's really nothing we can do about it"
Heck, why even vote if the dictator insists that he will stay in
power (regardless of elections)?
Microsoft-controlled Restricted ('Secure') Boot needs to return
to headlines, not just because of imminent elections, where all the
machines are in effect controlled by Microsoft, which would even
attack judges abroad on behalf of the dictator.
From this past weekend:
Linux Foundationals: From Silicon to Userspace - The Boot and Init
Chain

From the article:
Here’s the catch for Linux distributions: almost every PC ships
with Microsoft’s certificates in db and nothing else. Getting
Fedora’s key into the firmware of every laptop on the planet isn’t
realistic. So the industry settled on shim: a small, deliberately
boring first-stage loader that Microsoft signs with its third-party
UEFI CA. Shim itself contains the distribution’s certificate
(Fedora’s, or Red Hat’s on RHEL), and from that point on the
distribution verifies its own binaries.
Can we please stop treating this as normal or acceptable?
