Microsoft's 'Hiring Freeze' (Layoffs) and Salary Freeze (While Inflation Approaches Double-Digit Rates)

My merit increase was 0.3% after one of the most stressful years I’ve had at this company. Layoffs, reorgs, AI pressure, smaller teams, more work, constant stress… and apparently this is what Microsoft thinks that’s worth. Apparently merit increases are all under 1% and some manager on Blind said that top performers are getting 0.3%–0.6%. At this point just give me 0%. What the fuck is 0.3%? It somehow feels way more disrespectful like they decided I was worth pennies.

Remember that true/real US inflation is what matters to most Americans (food, heat, appliances; not what oligarchs prefer to measure despite it being inapplicable to most):

The real cause of America’s rising inflation

In Europe's second-largest institution, the EPO, people's purchasing power is fast decreasing and workers go on strike over this. There are also PIPs. So workers' stress levels shoot up, compensation goes down.

At Microsoft, there are both PIPs and salary erosion, aside from the mass layoffs that target the top earners. If they get replaced by anyone, it'll be low-paid folks in low-salary regions.

It is hardly surprising that many at Microsoft are looking or wanting to leave for years already. In 2023 (July, so almost exactly 3 years ago) that was true for most employees surveyed/polled.
