We are fast approaching our twentieth anniversary (to be celebrated one way or another about 5 weeks from now; we need to decide how, maybe another party in yet another British town).

We recognise that most people did not read this site in 2006 and don't understand the site's history, the site's community, its expansion beyond the Web, and all sorts of other things.

Aside from the site, there's the IRC community and culture. Those are not the same thing. Different people, some overlapping faces and names.

Let's start with facts or begin with awful myths; we can debunk common falsehoods, ranging from the very basic fact that I did not set up this site (nor did I choose the original name), for example, to the origin of the current name being our webhost Tracy (still active by the way!), soon to be semi-endorsed by Richard Stallman albeit only after the fact (he did suggest a motto that we then happily and promptly adopted).

This matter - among several others - was brought up 2 months ago when I spoke to an honourable judge at the High Court. I think this was almost our tenth hearing at the High Court and we'll try to go to the Court of Appeal next year. There are public interest aspects, ministers are interested, we are receiving sponsorship from the state, and I'll always remember how back in 2013 Tom Watson told me in person (when we met) that he knew and respected the site (a lot of our backers are in the Labour Party, maybe not too shockingly).

There are many sites that focus on local communities or particular (local for many, domestic to authors) nations. We're not one of those sites. boycottnovell or techrights began in the US, many of our team members are nowadays in northern Europe, and we have a lot of contributions (by various contributors) from other continents, including America (not only SLAPPs come from America).

We wish to correct the possible/potential misconception about it. As the public face of the site, yours truly being European, some people assume that techrights.org is a British site (.org is actually US) or a European site. It is not. It's international. It always was!

Our scope of coverage and the sorts of stories we cover aren't meant to relate to just one single country or one particular political "wing" (or whatever terminology denotes a fractured or divided population).

We oppose all sorts of things (e.g. software patents) and promote others. This is irrespective of geography and demography. That will never change. █
