OOXML: Fail?

Posted in ISO, Microsoft, Open XML at 11:34 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

We have already witnessed a failure at the BRM in Geneva. Might we be seeing an even bigger one soon? OpenMalaysia looks at the situation, which it presents in table form.

Here are the results, as live as they get, of the countries voting for DIS 29500 (more popularly known as Microsoft OOXML). This is the last lap of DIS 29500 (Microsoft OOXML) and we can expect things to get heated. This list is based on verifiable information and I am taking necessary precautions to not include speculative votes. iso-vote.com has a pretty pictorial view of the votes and you even toggle the countries to see the overall outcome.

[...]

Voting In Progress:

* Criteria 1: 17/32 = 53.13% (FAIL)
* Criteria 2: 18/87 = 20.69% (PASS)
* Overall Result: FAIL

We shall find out the final outcome within days, but coming shortly are some more stories of irregularity. What else can be expected as the deadline draws near?

    I am starting to wonder about the possibility MS might indeed lose the approval. Let’s assume it fails, what happens next?

    Will MS implement ODF?, if so, how many time would they delay such implementation? Mos importantly, will MS implement it correctly?

    I guess they would also still insist on OOXML, and probably totally ignore ODF’s ISO status and keep OOXML as the default, I guess more antitrust suits would work, but it is starting to look like MS doesn’t care about paying fines to the EU anymore…

    Not much. But it’s also too early to make decent predications. See the comments. Other sites started to chalk up the situation while Andy is away on vacation (probably got nauseous just seeing it all).

    Au contraire, unless they lie blatantly. They explicitly expresses worry over this in CeBIT 2008 and also in their latest SEC filing.

    They might soon enter debt as well. Don’t fall for the illusion they want you to fall into.

    The OOXML standard process won’t fail but this is not important. One way or the other they will fail.

    So they get their crappy standard approved by ISO and wrecked the ISO system. Disapproval is just a matter of raison d’etat but it does not happen.

    No one except Microsoft loses when OOXML get disapproval. Even Microsoft partners should know that the party will be over after disapproval.
