A couple of posts ago we referenced a new item which says: "A recent poll found 20% or respondents indicate they would switch to GNU/Linux as a result of the ending of support for SP2."

According to this article, Vista 7 has adoption issues.

Even after dumping support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), the Vole is still finding it hard to get people to move off Windows XP and onto Windows 7. According to figures released by Netmarketshare, usage of Windows Vista and Windows 7 combined fails to eclipse that of Windows XP. That's a disappointing statistic, given that Windows 7 has been available, in one way or another, for well over a year and Windows Vista has been knocking around for nearly four years.

This agrees with trends we've been been pointing out since yesterday. Vista 7 is hardly the success Microsoft wants people to believe that it is. ⬆

XP SP2 was a disaster. Probably the reason it was intentionally mislabeled as an upgrade rather than the failed full operating system change that it was could have been that many shops had vowed not to buy an upgrade from M$ ever again. Businesses and universities had enough political experience and could block what the Microsofters could throw at them in regards to a system upgrade. They could not fight a patch, even if it wasn't a patch in anything but name.

Once SP2 hit, shops were DDOS'ed for two years and that gave Microsofters two years to catch up on their whack-a-mole against linux.

The migration from XP to XP SP2 was about as painful for the IT departments as it would have been to just upgrade to Linux. Vista and Vista7 make it hell for the users too. At this point there is no legitimate reason to not upgrade to either Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux or to Ubuntu.

WINE does a good job on some of the legacy applications while replacements are found.
