A Drop in Half (From 208 to 104): Sharp Decline in Number of Gemini Capsules That Use Let's Encrypt CA Since December
Gemini is increasing its independence from Certificate Authorities (CAs)
HAVING commented on the high pace of decline of Let's Encrypt in Gemini (almost every day lately), consider some historical data, stating with July 1st and going backwards to December 1st:
5.8% gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/archive-stats/2024-07-01.gmi 7.5% gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/archive-stats/2024-06-01.gmi 7.4% gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/archive-stats/2024-05-01.gmi 7.6% gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/archive-stats/2024-04-01.gmi 7.6% gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/archive-stats/2024-03-01.gmi 7.5% gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/archive-stats/2024-02-01.gmi 7.6% gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/archive-stats/2024-01-01.gmi 8.0% gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/archive-stats/2023-12-01.gmi
So on December 1st 208 (8.0% of the whole) used Let's Encrypt. Now? Well, now just 104 and 3.4% of the whole, not 8.0%.
There is probably some good explanation for it, but the net effect is, a lot more capsules nowadays sign their own certificates. Some years ago about 12% of capsules used Let's Encrypt. █
