Catch-up on what we've been up to
I feel like too often my posts on gopher feel a little angst-posting because, well, I have a tendency to mostly post on here when I'm not posting over on fedi.
I'd like to change that and use this like an actual public journal.
So what have I been up to? Well I finished reading Computers as Theatre and wrote up a bunch of notes on it, which I promise I will actually turn into a shlog post on rawtext. I'm chewing on Ark of the Possible which is a really cool book that gets into applications of merleau-ponty's philosophy of the body to animal rights and ethics, dealing with issues of a generalized intersubjectivity that she calls "interanimality".

[Repeat] [Old] J Mascis
I have been a Dinosaur Jr. fan since the 90s (even then, a little late to the party). However, I never really listened to any of J Mascis' solo stuff. I've been listening through a bunch of it over the past few days, starting with the newer album "What Do We Do Now". However, the album "Elastic Days" has really been the one I've connected with. It does most of the things I like about the full band experience, but with a bit mellower vibe (largely acoustic guitar instead of the wall of fuzz. I do miss the Lou songs from Dinosaur Jr., but I am really impressed with the solo stuff.

Free Paul Watson
Two days ago, activist Paul Watson was arrested in Greenland (Denmark). He risks spending the rest of his life in a... Japanese prison. Yet another inversion of values.
His detractors call him an eco-terrorist, like our dear french interior minister with regard to the «soulèvements de la terre» and other so-called ‘radical’ environmental movements. The term itself should not give rise to debate: the real eco-terrorists are not those who defend the living, the earth, but those who pillage it by their pollution, their intensive exploitation, exhausting it until this planet becomes uninhabitable not only for humans but for so many other animal and plant species. The term was defined by the FBI under Reagan to fight animal rights movements such as the Animal Liberation Front. And Paul Watson was already in the sights at that time... Who is etymologically right? Ecology is a term that refers to the interactions and relationships between living beings and, by extension, all living things. And one of its definitions is the study of balance and harmony in living things. To be a terrorist in this field is therefore to endanger and terrorise living things. And Paul Watson in no way endangers living things, he protects them.

Botany Broken 🪴
So a while ago I apparently broke Botany. It's a local version we are running on tilde.club ourselves.
I noticed watering my plant didn't work anymore. Running botany from the shell gave me this error.

Back into Retro-gaming
I'm a big fan of retro gaming, using old consoles or emulation to play old games from the 70s to the 2000s. I can play a lot of games on my PC using Retroarch or other emulators. It's good for computer games, not for console games because of the controllers. I have played on the real console or computer with Amstrad CPC, Amiga, PC with CGA and EGA screen, Nintendo SNES, Gamecube, Wii, Sony Playstation 1 to 3, Sega Saturn, Microsoft Xbox and 360 and portable consoles with Nintendo GBA SP, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo Switch Lite and Sony PSP. So many memories and fun since my teenage years until now. Not far from 40 years of gaming... But now I don't have time or money to spend on AAA games of the last consoles or PC. Handheld consoles are my favourite because I can play anywhere, anytime... almost any kind of game. If the latest Nintendo Switch lite is fun, I wanted to easily play my old favourite games...

Kernel Bug Killed My Suspend
My Dell XPS-13 has become a problem. I love this computer (I am using it to write this). The problem is suspending. When I resume from suspend the keyboard no longer works. After a lot of searching it seems that this is a kernel bug. I close the lid on this laptop a lot throughout the day, so having to boot from cold every time I use it is just not workable. I ended up ordering a PinebookPro to bridge the gap, as I had some work that needed to get done and upgrading my OS and kernel and firmware did nothing to fix the problem. Nor did fiddling with the kernel settings via grub: i8042.reset, for example.

taskwarrior
I had seen the CLI personal task management tool Taskwarrior pop up a while ago. I liked the idea of doing task management solely from the keyboard. I've been in and out of the Getting Things Done (GTD) method for a few years using tools like Nirvana HQ and Microsoft To Do (yuck). It was promising to see they've mentioned GTD on their website. For this machine I've brought back to life I'm going to try Taskwarrior. It'll be a good way to familiarise myself further with the CLI.
