General-Purpose Computers to Become Growing Area of Coverage
Without them, we have little left for controlling our lives
Arduino might not outlive its parent and might not survive the acquisition. General-purpose computers are at risk. Running programs one can modify is already getting harder. Due to hardware restrictions, even modifying one's operating system has become increasingly challenging.
In a lot of ways, doors are closing on us. The enemies of Software Freedom fight our right to control our computing; failing conventional methods, they SLAPP us as well [1, 2,3] because they won't tolerate opposition to their sinister agenda.
Techrights has long focused on software patents (in fact, since the very beginning in 2006) and 3 weeks from now it turns 19. We're going to devote more time and resources to covering the war on general-purpose computers. It's something that I discussed with a friend earlier today, entertaining questions like, what if Raspberry Pi is next to be acquired by some large company such as Sony? █
