GNU/Linux Turns 43 in 3 Months From Now
Last month: ICYMI: GNU/Linux Did Not Start in Finland
"On September 27, 1983, Richard M. Stallman (RMS) posted the initial announcement of GNU, his project to develop a fully free (as in freedom) operating system. Although the GNU Project wouldn't officially start until January 1984, RMS's announcement outlines GNU's initial plan of development and core components." -FSF history

The Manifesto of the Free software movement (GNU Manifesto, 1985) turned 40 last year. GNU was combined with Linux here in Manchester (MCC) 7 years later, a year after the first public release of Linux. GNU was first announced in 1983.
In a couple of months the media will tell us that "Linux" (but not referring to the kernel alone) turns 35, even if the system people speak of when they say "Linux" is almost 43.
Exactly 3 months after GNU turns 43 Mr. Torvalds will turn 57 (he was born 28 December 1969). He was 13 when GNU started. On multiple occasions, including press interview, Torvalds credited the success of Linux also to the GPL, GCC, and various other cornerstones of GNU. █
