Obscene Contradiction in Microsoft's Layoffs Tally ("Official" Numbers Do Not Add Up)
The sister site contains a one-sentence outline of why Microsoft's statements about the layoffs don't make sense, but then consider "Microsoft's layoffs extend beyond Xbox". It says we should expect 3,200 XBox firings (not counting PIPs, "buyouts" etc.) and also "3,200 jobs [cut] in divisions outside of Xbox today". That alone is 6,400, not counting subsidiaries and contractors. To quote:
Microsoft is cutting 3,200 jobs in divisions outside of Xbox today, mostly targeting the organization's Commercial Business segment. The layoffs come in addition to a large but expected firing spree that also hit Microsoft's Xbox arm on Monday, July 6.[...]
In the case of Xbox, Microsoft laid off 1,600 employees today and is preparing for a further 1,600 firings in the coming months. Additionally, it's spinning off four studios — Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs — and potentially shuttering a fifth, Arkane.
They already seem to be googlebombing the "official" numbers with something about "hey hi".
Microsoft also evades transparency in various countries. This is Ireland:
A spokesperson for the Department of Enterprise said it received a notification of proposed collective redundancies from Microsoft today.Such notifications are required in cases of 30 or more threatened job cuts.
"Any further queries should be directed to the company," the department said.
It is not yet known how many jobs are at risk at Microsoft's Irish operation.
The company employs around 6,000 people in Ireland, 4,000 directly and another 2,000 at LinkedIn which it also owns.
A spokesperson for Microsoft Ireland said the company would not be giving a regional breakdown of where the job losses will occur.
Notice how they treat "LinkedIn" as separate, even if it's being folded into Microsoft along with GitHub.
Don't believe the "official" numbers, which piggyback misclassification and misuse terminology. █
