Do-No-Evil Saturday - Part III: Managed Objects Managed by Novell, Identity Management, and Lots More

Novell's acquisition of Managed Objects is now a done deal.

By adding the Managed Objects toolset to the Novell portfolio of data center solutions, we are unique in providing technology-agnostic and proven cross-platform solutions that span both the physical and virtual worlds - all in one unified view. Expect to hear more about our M.O. for Managed Objects soon

Mail

Last week we wrote about Novell's release of GroupWise 8, but the coverage is not over yet.

Novell announced the availability of GroupWise 8, the cross-platform email and calendaring solution. This productivity solution offers support for Windows, Linux, Mac and the web.

More Blackberry articles like this one continue to boast the phone's support of GroupWise.

RIM's recently unveiled Storm announcing the Business minded Blackberry's entry in the Touchscreen echelons. It might be an attempt to pit against pioneer Apple or alternatively an attempt to take the innovation ahead and make it relevant to its consumer segment.

[...]

What it naturally scores high on is its aptness for the business user with stuff like good e-mail capabilities, ability to work out of personal accounts with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, Novell GroupWise and, BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

GWAVA has not much to share other than an addition of a sponsor for its big annual event.

GWAVA is pleased to announce thatCondrey Corporation has committed to exhibit at GWAVACon North America 2009.They are new this year in joining with GWAVA and Novell at this informativeconference.

Identity Management

Novell does not get neglected in this article about identity management.

NEC has deployed the identity management system by integrating Microsoft’s Active Directory and Novell’s eDirectory. Active Directory service enables the users to manage the identities that make up network environments. Its network services include directory services, Kerberos-based authentication and DNS-based naming.

[...]

Ritchie said: “We looked for a technology supplier that had both Microsoft and Novell capabilities and credentials. NEC Philips met these criteria.”

There is little more about this business area in Ovum, a research business.

Computer Associates has acquired two identity management vendors in consecutive months. There is a renewed vigour in the market since HP withdrew from the field in February 2008. Following Novell's acquisition of the HP products in May 2008 and IBM's blatant pitch for disaffected HP customers at the beginning of October, Computer Associates has boosted its capability with the acquisition of two specialist identity management technology vendors.

Security

Not much this week, except this one and the YaST issue mentioned earlier.

Description: Novell eDirectory is an X.500-compatible directory service product for centrally managing access to resources on multiple servers and computers within a given network. Novell eDirectory is exposed to four heap-based buffer overflow issues because it fails to perform adequate boundary checks on user-supplied data. Novell eDirectory versions prior to 8.8 SP3 are affected.

Partners

Novell is still hoping to fix its channel problems (also published in here), following the departure of a couple of frustrated chiefs (the latter among them lasted for just months).

Infrastructure vendor, Novell, will revamp its channel after a recent lack of focus on the partner community.

[...]

"The PartnerNet program is good, but we want to make it easier. We'll be making an announcement around a quick start program for new partners soon, as we've found that partners want to follow the path of least resistance when it comes to certification and accreditation."

Marketing

The 'usual suspect' pushed another Novell commercial into YouTube.

That's all for this week.
