Summary: Communist China receives blind support from Microsoft and the US congress denounces Microsoft for it
Microsoft and tyranny go together hand in hand. Anyone who is familiar with Microsoft's past knows this very well.
Yesterday we wrote about
Google's situation in China and what it says about Microsoft, which is just so greedy and suppression-tolerant. Based on
this report from CNN, Google received praise and Microsoft accused of “enabling tyranny”.
Two days after Google stopped censoring search results in China, a congressional panel praised the company's actions while excoriating the Beijing government for its record on Internet censorship and human rights.
[...]
"They [Microsoft] need to get on the right side of human rights rather than enabling tyranny, which they're doing right now," [Rep. Chris] Smith said.
"I love to see Microsoft and tyranny in the same sentence," said our administrator. This is not the first time, either. The US government previously denounced Microsoft for helping the Chinese government find the identity of dissidents (which is could then imprison, torture, or even murder). One person on the panel even made a comparison to Nazi Germany when he denounced Microsoft's actions (around 2006).

But then, that should not be a surprise either. Since MS censors and distorts its own Bing search engine in countries it doesn't even have in order to further its own agenda or that of its larger stockholders, The hackers tried to get Gmail from freedom fighters in China, which implies that Google would not turn over this information, a credit to Google for that. I doubt that MS Hotmail, would not cooperate with the local Red Chinese authorities and not turn over the email accounts if asked. Not with their close cooperation with the Red Chinese government.
Ballmer can only say how he thinks its dumb that Google is pulling out of China, and how MS Bing will gain search, he is all about the bottom line greed, at the expense of personal and public freedom of the Chinese population. Since MS got its start as an American company, the people running it should be aware of freedoms and liberty. Inside they are morally ethically bankrupt, while very materially rich. MS spies on its users at ever turn, cooperates with oppressive regimes without any regret. MS is the corporate Big Brother of computing, and is without any redeeming features.
