THE Debian series that reproduces older articles about Debian is an ongoing 'mini-project'. We expect that to last till May or June.
The video above explains that pressure had been put on us (by Debian people and their employer/s) and as a result we did not republish Debian material for a number of years. This morning we reproduced an article about Bruce Perens and what he had said about Debian (public domain trademark promise) because it is relevant if not crucial to an ongoing case/legal fight at WIPO (2024). Debian - or SPI as its "commercial" front - needs to lose this fight (or case) for the sake of the Internet, not just free speech.
We intend to consult our community, asking internally for advice/opinion/decision and when the time is right we'll 'butt in'. We have just had a Mumble 'meeting' about that (yesterday). Some of the articles we relay right now are less "difficult" compared to others. Some are unimportant or less important because years have passed. We are being selective, but cherry-picking is based mostly on relevance.
In addition to reproducing these old articles we want to have ample time for articles of our own, with our own interpretation or opinion. One associate has suggested that we produce the occasional non-linking summary. Relaying without context reduces the effectiveness, the associate opines. "Adding the occasional summary or review of a handful at a time would help a lot."
Some of this will be done in text and we hope to do more as video clips too (our videos are accessed almost 300,000 times a week). In particular, we shall aim to explain the relevance of the material, i.e. why these specific ones are being relayed and what specifically they bring to Techrights (and how the fit into the path to Software Freedom).
"It helps new and less familiar people get up to speed if they know why the messages are posted," the associate adds. "Most people cannot connect any dots so the outlines have to be drawn even if only lightly."
Over the next few days we'll speak about the legal fight of 2022 and in-between we'll interject our own interpretation (as completely separate articles, of course).
Debian has issues, but we hope they will be tackled rather than people who talk about these issues getting silenced.
Expect about 7 more videos over the next couple of days. █
