schestowitzSorry for the late reply, has been a busy few months :)Aug 20 05:00
schestowitzYour original issue with ETIMEOUT is not the same as you've changed it to. Ping Timeout occurs when the client has successfully connected to the IRC network and then does not reply to a PING at some point.Aug 20 05:00
schestowitzI've purposely got it to only reconnect if it had already successfully connected at least once before otherwise it's a waste of time. If you get disconnected, and then it gets connection errors on reconnect, it will attempt to reconnect until it hits the max reconnection numbers.Aug 20 05:00

activelowsince alpine linux plans to develop a systemd alternative, and a replacement to openrc with "s6 service manager" i had another idea:Aug 20 08:28
activelowNO service manager at all and ditch openrc, systemd, and s6 entirelyAug 20 08:29
activelowinstead i will create an autexec.bat style service management script, rc.local, and spawn all services from thereAug 20 08:29
activelowof cause an /sbin/init which processes /etc/inittab for gettys is required, but this can remain very minimal thenAug 20 08:30
activelowand services will be managed with pkillAug 20 08:30
activelowit is not ideal, but has the benefit of simplicity. already slayed gentoo genkernel init scripts for that reason and repalced the tens of thousands of lines of script with less than 100 remaining for thisAug 20 08:35

activelowhad been thinking about this before, and DH key exchange raised suspiction for the following reason https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/cfrg/3OFq1kyZ9UYATC-PC5gTXzqNzP0/Aug 20 09:38

activelowasymmetric crypto (RSA pub/priv key scheme) is employed with TLS (and other protocols) in any case. as a consequence DH-keyx is redundant i think, since a security-association by trusting a cert is established already to encrypt and secure a channelAug 20 09:41
activeloweither the asymmetric security association (by RSA cert) can be trusted, then dh-keyx is somewhat redundant, or it can't then dh-keyx is prone to interception and other flaws on topAug 20 09:43
activelowsession keys and scheduling of them, depending on protocol details with TLS, do not benefit from DH-keyx necessarilyAug 20 09:47

activelowand, the block-mode of operation raised suspicion often, whenever I read about them, because ECB can be altered slightly to implement what i would describe as "secure ECB" (similar to GCM, alot simpler), which in conjunction with a strong hash function for block keys could render DH-keyx required to re-schedule keys mostly obsolete with TLS protocol tooAug 20 09:54
activelowi mean session keys and block keys are required, but dh-keyx doesn't necessarily help with thisAug 20 09:55

activelowa client can grab the pub-key from a cert, encrypt a desired random secret session key with it, and send it back to the server, then the server sends data encrypted with this key, without any dh-keyx required for this in principle. or am I in error with this?Aug 20 10:00

activelowand, wouldn't a random secret key be less prone to weaknesses since the certificate security association must be trusted anyway?Aug 20 10:04
activelowand, if a certificate security association cannot be trusted then dh-keyx is prone to interception and useless as a random secret session key would be?Aug 20 10:05

schestowitz-TRthey want that only for themselvesAug 20 10:06
schestowitz-TRsecrecy gives them more potential powerAug 20 10:06
activelowok, even then for *lawful* interception certificate-authorities exist to interfere at, instead of weakening the protocol elsewhereAug 20 10:06

activelowand, both TLS and ipsec to name two of these are complicated, and had shown to be vulnerable due to their complexityAug 20 10:07
activelowmeanwhile *lawful* interception didn't require this if agencies had access to CAsAug 20 10:07
schestowitz-TRthey have thatAug 20 10:08
schestowitz-TRwe spoke about that before as a matter of routine...Aug 20 10:08
activelowso, if the protocol had to be weakened then this is an indicator of other problems, such as agencies couldn't coordinate for *lawful* interception at CAsAug 20 10:08
activelowor, *lawful* interception isn't, and instead some other entities intend to spie secretlyAug 20 10:08
activelowwhich, is a political question then, who these are, and why, and if this can be considered lawfulAug 20 10:09
activelowi mean, DH-keyx can be useful, but i suspect it is of limited use with TLSAug 20 10:10
