Meta in the Middle, slurping up (or generating) 'your' private keys
"There is more yammering about 'end-to-end' encryption in a platform which is incapable of it by design," an associate noted, referring specifically to this recent noise about Meta's (Facebook) WhatsApp:
We saw the media and some fools linking to it, boasting/bragging about "E2EE" and other fiction. The main problem is, some of these fools are influential people, but let's not name them as they probably don't spread the lie by intention, they just unwittingly spread the misconceptions.
Well, the topic is highly important, it's not just about Facebook, and it was mentioned in IRC lately, citing also the lies the EFF and its Board (including Mr. Schneier) were spreading after Facebook had apparently paid the EFF. We suppose the modern EFF only cares about privacy until you pay the staff. Then, the EFF might call mass surveillance "End-to-end Encryption (E2EE)", distracting people from the true software (or cipher) choices, wherein only the peers (or ends) retain copies of private keys and can decipher transmissions. Encryption in the "Facebook sense" probably means encryption between you and Facebook, but Facebook shares your secrets with companies and governments. Facebook is a lying company, just like its founder*. Facebook is a snake.
We remind readers that the original EFF was OK. Things changed (see "Electronic Frontier Foundation Incorporated is Run by/for Corporations Now (Members' Money is Less Than a Quarter of the Money EFF Receives)" above) and now we're meant to think privacy is for prostitutes. Cindy Cohn's "marketing strategy" (or Wikipedia ad) will be short-lived. Bringing in GAFAM money is only possible while credibility remains, not once it runs out. █
