French Cities Dumping Microsoft Because They Recognise Software Freedom, Open Standards, GNU/Linux Autonomy
"The French city of Lyon has decided to ditch Microsoft’s Office suite and plans to adopt Linux and PostgreSQL," reports The Register about a large city in France, a place known for all sorts of things of international significance.
It seems noteworthy that Vista 11 "Growth" (so-called!) stalled in France, at least based on statCounter. Perhaps they look carefully before they jump; or, to quote an idiom I learned today, "measure twice, cut once."
Compared to the UK, France is adopting Free software quite fast. This has long been known and publicly pointed out. French people's relationship with Americans isn't the same as Brits'. The languages aren't even the same, set aside cultural difference, competition, and suspicion (because of history).
We hope that more French cities - maybe Paris - will follow Lyon. █
