"What Comes After Free Software?" Wrongly Insinuates We've Reached the Goal (Prison is Not the Goal)
The oil tycoons use similar tactics against environmentalists, giving them fake "wins"
"What Comes After Open Source?" is a common line from the hype agents (who get paid to mislead us) or the OSI co-founder, who recognised that OSI had failed users and developers. At Microsoft, for instance, a GitHub (proprietary) CEO, who attacked the GPL, said "Open Source [had] won" when it actually lose because Microsoft bribed and hijacked the OSI as well as many projects that compete with Microsoft. The intention there is to tell us, stop fighting, Microsoft is now the boss and that's OK!
Did Linux take over?
Yes, sort of (except in desktops and laptops).
Did it spread freedom?
No. Hardly.
A lot of work remains to be done.
Right now GNU is also under attack from deeply misguided people, so not only the GPL is besieged. And people who used to promote Free software got bribed by Microsoft to promote proprietary software using a new name [1, 2]. They try to herd everyone into Microsoft's own nest [1, 2].
When GitHub finally goes offline (no business model) we'll know that we're making good process towards Software Freedom. A prison disguised as "free hosting" is just sharecropping if not slavery in jail, or "community service". █
