IsambardPrinceShe was just sitting there because they didn't have the money for a 4 ton central air system.Jun 23 00:21
IsambardPrince:/Jun 23 00:21
IsambardPrinceInstead of replacing their old R-12 system they just kept paying someone to fill 'er up.Jun 23 00:22
IsambardPrinceEvery year, R-12 gets more expensive. Nobody in the world is legally producing more of it.Jun 23 00:22
IsambardPrinceSo you have to recover some from old appliances that still have some in them. That makes those appliances valuable even if they're completely broken.Jun 23 00:23
IsambardPrinceBecause you can get the R-12 out of them.Jun 23 00:23
IsambardPrinceBut there's only so many of these old appliances.Jun 23 00:23
IsambardPrinceMy mother doesn't understand how the Montreal Protocol works. She says "Al Gore took the stuff out of the hairspray that made it work." Al Gore was a member of the House of Representatives in 1989. The Senate, which is another chamber of Congress, ratified the treaty.Jun 23 00:24
MinceRlolJun 23 00:24
IsambardPrinceIt is a treaty agreed to by essentially the entire world to stop producing CFCs and other chemicals which deplete the ozone layer.Jun 23 00:24
IsambardPrinceAl Gore had nothing to do with this.Jun 23 00:25
MinceRthey replaced the propellantJun 23 00:25
MinceRwhat did your mother use hairspray for, if the propellant was what made it work?Jun 23 00:25
IsambardPrinceI don't know. She just complains and blames the Montreal Protocol for the hairspray not working, and believes that Al Gore had something to do with it even though it was a treaty written at the United Nations and agreed to by the Senate, which Al Gore was never in (unless you count later when he was the Vice President, whose only job in the Senate is casting tie-breaking votes if one should arise).Jun 23 00:27
IsambardPrinceShe doesn't know what the Montreal Protocol is. But she blames "Al Gore" and doesn't name the treaty.Jun 23 00:27
IsambardPrinceShe just says "The stuff that made the hairspray work."Jun 23 00:27
MinceRcould you put out a fire with the hairspray with the CFC propellant?Jun 23 00:28
MinceRthat's something that wouldn't work anymore, if it ever didJun 23 00:29
IsambardPrinceDick Cheney argued that the Vice President is part of the Executive and Legislative branch because the Constitution lists him in the sections on the executive and then again as "President of the Senate". But the "President of the Senate" doesn't control what goes on in the Senate. They could preside over the Senate if they wanted to, but in practice it never happens unless they expect a tie-breaking vote to have to happen. Because Jun 23 00:30
IsambardPrincepresiding over the Senate is such a boring task. They usually give it to a junior Senator because someone has to preside over the session, but there's no real power there. You can rule on motions, but you can only rule as it pertains to the rulse of the Senate, which the Vice President doesn't have any role in.Jun 23 00:30
IsambardPrinceYou can rule on motions based on the rules of the Senate and shout that the floor will come to order, and that's about it.Jun 23 00:31
IsambardPrinceThe only time the job may get spicy is if a fist fight breaks out or something and you have to ask the Sergeant-at-Arms to break it up. But that hasn't happened afaik in well over 100 years.Jun 23 00:32
IsambardPrinceFist fights in the legislature happen a lot in Taiwan apparently. In one case, a member of one of the minority parties even stole a bill off the floor so they couldn't vote on it right away.Jun 23 00:33
IsambardPrinceI like to imagine that fights that break out in the Taiwan legislature are like a King Hu movie full of Chinese people jumping around 30 feet in the air, sword fighting, and of course martial arts.Jun 23 00:34
MinceRlolJun 23 00:34
IsambardPrinceSteal the bill and go jumping off into the sunset with it.Jun 23 00:36
IsambardPrinceChinese filibuster.Jun 23 00:36
IsambardPrinceMinceR, Someone said something we were talking about should be as common as public phone booths used to be.Jun 23 00:39
IsambardPrinceI said, "So should public phone booths.Jun 23 00:39
IsambardPrinceRemember when people were crazy and just spent a quarter calling someone when they needed to, not $100 a month so you can have this stupid thing that tracks you and follows you around and sends all your information to advertisers and the police, and can annoy you wherever you happen to be?"Jun 23 00:39

IsambardPrinceMinceR, Someone got a pile of VHS tapes for free because they were old Christian end times movies and televangelists.Jun 23 00:42
IsambardPrinceHe asked if they were good for anything.Jun 23 00:42
IsambardPrinceI said they haven't made blank tapes since 2016, so if he needed some blanks he could cover the write protect tab with some duct tape and record over them for whatever the length of tape is in there.Jun 23 00:43
techrights-news"It's been a good while since I last put my foot on these alleys, let alone this particular pub, but ho boy I missed it a good bunch despite that -- I'll have a nice, big cup of coffee mixed with oat milk & Bailey's Irish Cream dear bartender, thank you." gemini://midnight.pub/posts/2649Jun 23 00:43
IsambardPrinceSome old tapes have sticky shed or other problems. But most still work okay.Jun 23 00:44
techrights-news"The bartender left with the order and i took my bag of weed and went outside for a smoke. When i came back the discussion got heated. And cold beer was waiting for me. in my mind i saw that everyone has their own truth. And most politely i was sipping the pint and was happy i could take part in it." gemini://midnight.pub/posts/2648Jun 23 00:44
IsambardPrinceI'd estimate that about 10% of the VHS tapes you run into have some kind of serious problem with them at this point if they date back into the 90s.Jun 23 00:44

MinceRalso, i don't see where the need to pretend all countries have to be judged by one single criterion comes from, and why it's how quickly you can get squatters out of property you've just boughtJun 23 00:56
IsambardPrinceYeah, but during that 8 months where that poor woman had to go to the landlord-tenant board and she wasn't even a landlord and they were completely destroying her house, they had "tenants rights" and she had to pay the government for the property taxes even though she couldn't use the house they were ruining.Jun 23 00:56

schestowitz[TR3]IBM will not exit consulting, BUT they could easily shrink the division by 1/2. (eg 150k headcount going to 75k). Why do I say this? IBM has decided to focus almost exclusively on their enterprise offerings (mainframe (90%) and big power (niche engagements). Everything else as far as IBM is concerned is not worth the fight as margins are too thin. So how does consulting shrink? There are two ways.Jun 23 18:27
schestowitz[TR3]    Focus on all things Enterprise. Exit all things Intel IBM’s last 20 SW purchases reinforce that this strategy is well underway.Jun 23 18:27
schestowitz[TR3]    Let AI replace most of the back office consulting support personnel. Again IBM’s own internal actions support this strategy and is well underway (replaced HR, automated SW modernization, bought a pile of Enterprise SW modernization vs developing it in house, retired most of IBM’s internal cloud efforts and replaced them with partnerships).Jun 23 18:27
schestowitz[TR3]IBM’s head count worldwide last year dropped 12k (282 to 270) even though they made several major purchases. That says legacy headcount is going down faster than innovative head count is growing. That process is only accelerating, and 2025 headcount reductions to date have already exceeded 2024’s headcount reduction. As IBM expands the AI efforts we are only going to see consulting headcount go down faster and actually start tJun 23 18:27
