DaemonFC@MrDaemonFC2UDec 24 23:20
DaemonFC0 seconds agoDec 24 23:20
DaemonFCThere are a few arguments in favor of the percolator. 1. If you use 1 Tbsp per 6 ounces in a drip maker like the Technivorm Moccamaster, which I do have, it'll be unacceptably weak coffee. So to get the right strength they recommend 2 Tbsp per 6 ounces water. 2. Percolators don't need a filter and if you want to use one to keep grounds out of the thing, you can just punch a hole in a Bunn-style filter with a ball pen and carefully push it down into the Dec 24 23:20
DaemonFCbrew basket to avoid having to buy the more expensive percolator filters. So from a purely economical standpoint, if you're not feeding the thing your good coffee and want to get going in the morning economically with some Folgers, have at it.Dec 24 23:20
DaemonFCNo, it won't ever make "the best" coffee, but with the price of coffee going up up and away due to the inflation lately, there's a case to "save coffee" with a percolator if you're not particular about a perfect 10 on the final product. It's at least as good as some of the cheap auto-drip makers like the ones that underextract a bit or create pockets because they don't use a shower type head.Dec 24 23:20
DaemonFCAt the worst, it's no worse than a French Press in my opinion and tons of people use those. You're literally just heating up boiling water and pouring it in and pushing down on a plunger, and you can't even control some of the bitterness and terpene content by using a paper filter with one of those.Dec 24 23:20
DaemonFCSo is it better, is it worse than other methods? The electric percolator has different strong and weak points. I'd place it squarely over a French Press or 80% of the auto-drip machines out there. And if you're not the best about descaling it and have hard water, it's difficult to plug things up so badly that you just ruin the entire unit, which definitely happens with auto drip. And the auto drip machines require a lot of coffee, so they'll eat through Dec 24 23:20
DaemonFCyour wallet shouting "Feed me, Seymour! Feed me all night long!"Dec 24 23:20
DaemonFCPlus, I can't commit to just one way of doing anything.Dec 24 23:20

DaemonFCAlso, who uses vinegar in a auto drip machine they want to keep? So you have to buy descaling powder and mix it and that costs more, and you have to do it every month or two, and if you do use vinegar it'll destroy the cheap plastic seals and gaskets which percolators don't have and get absorbed into all the plastic and rubber crap percolators don't have. Even if you pour in full strength vinegar and perk it to descale a percolator, you won't ruin the Dec 24 23:24
DaemonFCmachine or have it tasting like vinegar for the next two weeks if you just hand wash it afterwards.Dec 24 23:24
DaemonFCMinceR: Different strengths and weaknesses.Dec 24 23:25
DaemonFCIt's like comparing two machines of any type that do kind of the same thing.Dec 24 23:25
DaemonFCHe complains of bitterness in the electric percolator coffee but he started out by saying he wasn't going to use a paper filter because he didn't want to be unfair to the stovetop one which couldn't use one.Dec 24 23:26
DaemonFCThen he proceeded to admit the stovetop coffee was horrid and the electric percolator coffee was a lot better.Dec 24 23:26
DaemonFCWith a 1 cent paper filter in it, you improve it a whole lot.Dec 24 23:26
DaemonFCThat's where people get off thinking "Oh God, why did I even waste money on this?" Because they follow the instructions and I've never seen a manual that says "add a paper filter" which you can do.Dec 24 23:27
DaemonFCThis is like taking the $10 engine air filter out of your car and complaining the engine's ruined 50,000 miles later. Like, what did you think would happen? The results without that cheap piece of paper are SO MUCH WORSE.Dec 24 23:28
DaemonFCThe bitterness isn't so much about the temperature as it is about the undesirable compounds you let in without a proper filter.Dec 24 23:28
DaemonFCAnd people are so stupid that they make their auto drip coffee terrible by putting in a "permanent filter".Dec 24 23:29
DaemonFCThose don't do anything except hold most of the grounds back.Dec 24 23:29
DaemonFCThey let in all the crap you don't want as far as taste goes.Dec 24 23:29
DaemonFCThey're also more restrictive so you're back to over-extraction.Dec 24 23:30
DaemonFCI've seen a lot of expensive auto drips come with one of those stupid things and not mention why you shouldn't use it.Dec 24 23:30
DaemonFCCanadians don't even deserve to have a country. They should be annexed into the United States so they can have a proper Constitution and we can show them how you make coffee.Dec 24 23:31
DaemonFCThey don't have anything up there except Brandon Lobster and French Presses I think.Dec 24 23:31

DaemonFCOne of their late night hosts was mocking the US Social Security System.Dec 24 23:32
DaemonFCHe forgot to mention that even if nobody ever fixes it, it will still pay out more money after 2033 than the Canadian one does now.Dec 24 23:33
DaemonFCThe average Social Insurance check in Canada is only about $700 Canadian, I think. I recall reading something like that.Dec 24 23:33
DaemonFCHere, the average check is about $1,800.Dec 24 23:33
DaemonFCAnd that's USD, which are worth more.Dec 24 23:33
DaemonFCSo even if you lopped off 23% of that, it would still be better than Canada.Dec 24 23:34
DaemonFCAlso, the majority of people in the US with a brain in their head saved at least something in a retirement account instead of hoarding unopened boxes from Amazon.Dec 24 23:34
DaemonFCThe people who are going to suffer the most from failing to plan are the people who were not smart enough to save something for themselves and cut their tax bill in the process for many years.Dec 24 23:35
DaemonFCMy mother kept going back and raiding her retirement account over and over again. Paying a $70 flat fee each time to get like $1,000 out.Dec 24 23:36

DaemonFCI do have a coffee grinder but I didn't put much money in it because I don't use it that often.Dec 24 23:48
DaemonFCIt's a blade grinder and a lot of people say don't use that because you'll get chunks of coffee that didn't hit the blades that much and you're better off with a burr grinder.Dec 24 23:48
DaemonFCWell, I don't want to spend over $100 on a burr grinder (most are WAY more than that).Dec 24 23:49
DaemonFCSo you can shake the blade grinder while it's going and just shake the thing up and down like you're playing with yourself and you won't have any coffee that makes it through without hitting the blades enough times.Dec 24 23:50
DaemonFCIt's stupid, it's a bit more work, but it does work.Dec 24 23:50
DaemonFCIf you use a grinder a lot then you may want a burr grinder because you can just pour the beans into a hopper and hit a button and it all just comes out the right size.Dec 24 23:50
