[Crispernaki] and I have something in common. We both saw this awesome project that made a scroll wheel out of a VHS head back in 2010, and wanted to make one. If you’re like us, there’s a creeping feeling that comes over you when you’re placing an order for parts for your latest project: Don’t I already have most of this stuff? With the well-stocked junk bins most of us sport and the stacks of defunct electronics that are almost always within arm’s length, chances are pretty good you do. And yet, we always seem to just click the button and place a new order anyway; it’s just easier.

Hackaday ☛ Plasma Cutting And 3D Printing Team Up To Make Bending Thick Sheet Steel Easier
Metalworking has always been very much a “mixed method” art. Forging, welding, milling, grinding; anything to remove metal or push it around from one place to another is fair game when you’ve got to make something fast. Adding in fancy new tools like CNC plasma cutting and computer-aided drafting doesn’t change that much, although new methods often do call for a little improvisation.

US Government: Almost Nobody Wants the New COVID Shots and Obamacare Makes Getting One a Disaster if You Do.
According to Ars Technica, the US government says that only 7% of adults and 2% of children even got this updated “booster”.
Those figures were current as of a few days ago.
They say it’s “abysmal” and that if we even get to the “disappointing” figure of 17% from last year, they’ll be “amazed”, and that everything from scheduling to trying to pay for it is a disaster, if you even want one, thanks to this Obamacare nonsense.
I mean, you don’t have to have any conspiracy theories. This is them saying that.
[...]
They try to conflate flu, RSV, and COVID when they’re all very different, and the flu shot has been around for about 80 years and it’s known to work, to an extent, and to not be all that dangerous.
-
Long Covid Sucks. No, Really, it Does, and if You haven’t got it by Now, You Probably Will.
Long Covid. If you are at all conversant with C20 twenties and thirties detective novels, you’ll know all about the invalids, the incapabables, the chronically ill. That was the flu. Though it never is the protagonist who is suffereing, it’s always someone else.
Well, this time it’s me. The protagonist of my own life.
I got covid when I got jabbed, early 2022. In the vaccination centre. Not because of the vaccine, but because, for some reason, everyone was expected to sit down, in a perspex cubicle for fifteen minutes, unmasked.
Of course, as you know, the covid virus remains infectuous for six hours and airborne, no droplets needed, in any area an infected person has been breathing for about ten minutes.

Federal News Network ☛ Live updates | Israel pounds Gaza strip, dismissing calls for cease-fire
Israel has launched an expanded ground operation after knocking out communications and creating a near-blackout of information in the Gaza Strip with increased bombardment and artillery fire. Israel says infantry and armored vehicles were backed by massive strikes from the air and sea overnight Friday into Saturday, including the bombing of Hamas tunnels. Other countries, United Nations officials and aid agencies described a dire situation on the ground in Gaza. Palestinian health officials say 377 people were killed in the latest barrage, bringing the 3-week death toll in Gaza to 7,703. More than 1,400 people in Israel were killed and 229 people were taken hostage during an Oct. 7 incursion by Hamas militants.

Federal News Network ☛ Mexico security authorities raise Hurricane Otis death toll to 39
Mexico’s security authorities have raised the death toll from the Category 5 Hurricane Otis that struck the country’s southern Pacific coast early Wednesday to 39. Mexico's security secretary said Saturday that the probable cause of death for the 39 was “suffocation by submersion.” But she added that investigations continue and that the victims had not yet been identified. The increase comes after the initial death toll of 27 had not changed since it was announced Thursday. In Acapulco on Saturday, government workers and volunteers cleared streets, gas station lines wrapped around the block, and some lucky families found food essentials as a more organized relief operation took shape.

Federal News Network ☛ The campaign spotlight this weekend is on Nevada, where dueling elections could confuse GOP voters
Nevada is a pivotal early state on the 2024 election calendar, but it’s gotten much less attention than leadoff Iowa and New Hampshire. Not this weekend. Most of the Republican presidential candidates are in Las Vegas for the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual meeting. That event has taken on greater significance this year because of the Israel-Hamas war. Donald Trump will follow his speech before that group with an evening appearance at a campaign organizing event. Nevada will have a primary election Feb. 6, as state law requires, and party-run caucuses two days later. That setup has drawn criticism about potential voter confusion and concerns the state party is attempting to tilt the scale for Trump, who's skipping the primary.

Federal News Network ☛ AP Sources: Auto workers and Stellantis reach tentative contract deal that follows model set by Ford
Jeep maker Stellantis has reached a tentative contract agreement with the United Auto Workers union that follows a template set earlier this week by Ford, two people with knowledge of the negotiations said Saturday. The deal, which still must be ratified by members, leaves only General Motors without a contract with the union. The agreement could end a six-week strike by more than 14,000 workers at Stellantis assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio, and at parts warehouses across the nation. Like workers at Ford, the strikers at Stellantis are expected to take down their picket lines and start returning to work in the coming days, before 43,000 union members vote.
