  • More Early-Spring Tanana Adventures (publ. 2024-04-17)

    I have been able to do some more walks along the Tanana, even though the snow has not melted yet. Last Wednesday, I noticed these two moderately-tall trees, which I believe are both the same kind of Willow tree, but with different gender catkins. My understanding is that the furry catkins are male.

    setting: cool morning air brings the smells of the allotments and the sounds of the city through the window. sitting in my mom's not very comfortable chair, enjoying a quiet moment before another busy day.

  • remint (for remind)

    Just a short note: the "remint" [1] is a nice too which makes use of the Remind calendar system ("remind") [2]. Somewhat easier.

    It's a bash script so it work quite well through ssh and so. At least on modern systems. It probably does just things one can do by using a bunch of proper commands (renders nice calendar, searches, updates calendars to a Git repository) but it does these things easier.

    It seems to work on semi-current Fedora and the current NetBSD without any issues.

    The centralization of everything is exposing just how many people and companies exist as parasites in our online ecosystem. We've known for years that Meta was using its free products, Facebook and Instagram, as data-capturing devices. And while maybe we expect it from the companies who own the products, it still manages to surprise when someone else is doing it, a third party, from a source we didn't expect.

  • Failure Is An Option

    100% test coverage is a luxury for the idle who have the time to write the necessary tests. Full coverage can be tricky if you need a file descriptor or socket to fail after some number of bytes (or maybe some amount of time or packets) have gone by. One can sometimes use a fake or mock object, or possibly LD_PRELOAD hacks. Some solutions may limit the portability of the tests.
