The Hill ☛ UT Austin students protest layoffs over new DEI ban
Students at the University of Texas at Austin protested Thursday after the school laid off more than 60 staff members to comply with Texas’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) ban that went into effect earlier this year.
About 200 students at the university disrupted a virtual faculty council meeting conducted by the university’s president Monday to oppose the layoffs, NBC News reported.
-
Gannett ☛ University of Texas confirms nearly 60 workers were laid off, most in former DEI positions
The layoffs have come as UT eliminates some programs and reorganizes its services after a state law banning diversity, equity, and inclusion offices at public universities went into effect. In addressing the employee layoffs for the first time since announcing earlier this month that the Campus and Community Engagement Division was closing, UT President Jay Hartzell took prewritten questions at a faculty council meeting on Monday and said 49 employees who had previously worked in DEI-related positions had been terminated and that eight associate or assistant deans whose work previously included related duties were returning to their faculty positions full time.

Exclusive-UBS shuts some China private funds, will lay off staff, sources say
UBS is shutting down some of its China private funds business and will lay off one-third of the staff as the Swiss bank cuts operating costs in the country, said three sources with direct knowledge of the matter.
UBS will shut up to 17 of its equity and bond private funds and return the money to the investors, out of 19 funds launched since the private fund management unit started in 2016, said two of the three sources. In China, private funds are equivalent to hedge funds and private equity funds, serving high net worth and institutional investors.

Sorting out backup internet #2: 5G modem
Having setup recursive DNS it was time to actually sort out a backup internet connection. I live in a Virgin Media area, but I still haven’t forgiven them for my terrible Virgin experiences when moving here. Plus it involves a bigger contractual commitment. There are no altnets locally (though I’m watching youfibre who have already rolled out in a few Belfast exchanges), so I decided to go for a 5G modem. That gives some flexibility, and is a bit easier to get up and running.
I started by purchasing a ZTE MC7010. This had the advantage of being reasonably cheap off eBay, not having any wifi functionality I would just have to disable (it’s going to plug it into the same router the FTTP connection terminates on), being outdoor mountable should I decide to go that way, and, finally, being powered via PoE.
For now this device sits on the window sill in my study, which is at the top of the house. I printed a table stand for it which mostly does the job (though not as well with a normal, rather than flat, network cable). The router lives downstairs, so I’ve extended a dedicated VLAN through the study switch, down to the core switch and out to the router. The PoE study switch can only do GigE, not 2.5Gb/s, but at present that’s far from the limiting factor on the speed of the connection.

Game Rant ☛ Rumor Claims Target is Going to Stop Selling Physical Media
Target may be doing away with physical media for movies and video games next year, at least according to a new rumor. The discussion of whether or not physical releases still have a place in the gaming industry has only intensified in recent years, with most titles being made available to purchase digitally without having to ever step foot inside a brick-and-mortar retailer like Target. The advent of subscription gaming services like Xbox Game Pass has added a new wrinkle to the conversation, as gamers can now access an entire digital library of games for a fraction of the price of a single physical copy.

washing and anointment of the feet
the intention of this ritual is to establish a bond of service (ideally mutual but without expectation or obligation), strength, and protection between two lovers through an act of humility. it reflects the affection one has for another, respecting both as cocreators of the relationship. it identifies a willing and acknowledged inequality in this relationship - a powerful being expressing subservience and desire to satisfy.

Emacs: Roaming Roam (publ. 2024-04-18)
I feel like a big hole in the Org Roam paradigm, or at least the implementation, is how do you deal conveniently with multiple projects. I.e., you want to be able to keep your nodes segregated in some way, by project or context, but all your nodes will go into the same directory and database, creating a lot of noise during completions, or forcing you to add prefixes or such like onto node titles.

Methods for expressing emphasis on gemtext.
Anyone that might have read my blogpost about asynchronous gemini content by email, might be wandering: how did I manage to make 𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤, and 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 text apear on a gemtext documet. No it has nothing to do with gemtext markup.
In fact if someone views the raw text of the article on their client, they will see that the emphasis is still there, and no markup is used to achive those effects. In fact it has nothing to do with the gemtext syntax, or how your Gemini client renders it. Those are simply utf-8 symbols, that anyone can write, and – 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 – every client can support.
