Retro Replay: Caesar II for MS-DOS (1995)
I remember getting hold of a shareware cd containing Caesar II and playing the demo endlessly. It's one of the few games out of the 90's that I still fire up on a regular basis, time as an adult does seem to fly by faster and faster, so regular in my case seems to indicate every 2 months or so.
I came across a local listing selling the complete boxed copy of the game for only €5! So I jumped on the opportunity to get a physical copy of the game I've been adoring for over 29 years.

Converting from teensy to arduino
For the past few days, I have been converting my weather station firmware to use an Arduino Atmega328P chip instead of a teensy Arm Cortex M7 chip. In my last post, I found that the teensy is significantly overpowered for the job and it could be contributing to why the temperature readings are consistently so high.

Reinventing the Assertion Wheel (go test)
Like many developers, I like to reinvent the wheel. Like many Go developers, I created my own assertion package...
For a couple of months it lived as an internal package, but prompted by a discussion on lobste.rs, I finally decided to make it a dedicated package.

Profectus Now On Flathub!
P.S. Apparently apps that use subdomains cannot be verified, because they require the user own the main domain, with exceptions for source code repo sites. My experience with Flathub has been pretty infuriating, with rude comments, extremely slow responses, and unnecessarily restrictive rules to follow. My biggest complaint, however, is the fact that you cannot use subdomains, and that I wasn't really told this before the app got merged. In the future I will probably change the app id to something under gitlab or github and move the HTTP website over to there so that I can verify the app, but I won't be doing this for a while.

Music Spotlight: Pure Hex — Spilling
As part of a double LP the bay area shoegaze band Pure Hex released part 1 as their EP "Spilling". This album came out on Friday, May 17th, and I've not stopped listening to it since.

Writing around writing
❦ Finding it difficult to write is not an uncommon occurrence it seems, on a platform focussed around a textual medium. I've read plenty of gemlogs, vowing to publish on their capsule morefrequently or to take it less seriously. For me sometimes the problem can be starting to write, the classic writers block. How do I want to write about this topic; a short informative piece, a long meandering essay, or is it time to have a go at poetry (the reader will be glad to note I do not make my poetry debut here). Sometimes it's other ideas that are the problem, a new and shiny topic can be a big distraction. For better or worse there's no shortage of inspiration in this vast space. If you are reading this then this gemtext managed to avoid the fate of those in my growing collection of shelved drafts.
