Microsoft's Silent Layoffs (Removal of Workers That They Don't Even Tell You About)

I've just been alerted about a new thread (no idea who posted that):

Microsoft will slap Performance Improvement Plans on a lot of employees so they can fire them off with giving them unemployment benefits: Across town the airplane company HR won't think twice about slapping Performance Improvement Plans on employees so the HR people can fire them and deny the employee Unemployment Benefits.

Microsoft probably does this to quite a few people right now. In the UK they use terms like "appraisals" and "gross negligence" to rationalise discarding workers without paying severance. Has Microsoft stooped down to that level?
