IRC at 16
THIS summer our IRC community turns 16 (the site will turn 18 in winter, Gemini is 3.5) and we're gratified to say we always published logs in the interest of (or for the sake of) transparency. There were no exceptions. In 16 years! That's owing to some backups in different locations, notably Canada (Mark Longridge) and sometimes Hungary (MinceR).
A lot has happened since then, including shake-ups. After 13 years we moved to our own (self-hosted) IRC network and last week had 81 users online - an all-time high for this independent network.
Logging has been used for us and against us - we're fine with that! That's just the "cost" of being transparent.
Well, the Python program we've used (and modified somewhat; the latest is in Git) was originally made by a Lithuanian developer, Marius Gedminas. He is now in Lithuania. That's him above. Thanks, Marius!
Life goes on, as do we. █
