Microsoft and the Sunk Cost Fallacy

posted by Roy Schestowitz on Sep 15, 2024

Why are we likely to continue with an investment even if it would be rational to give it up?

July: Why the Media is Dying (It Sucks, No Mentally Healthy People Will Tolerate This for Long)

"Microsoft aims for the sunk cost fallacy," an associate told us today, taking this new instance to make a point (there are many more like this):

Why pay for Microsoft Office every month when you can get it for life at just $25?

See the link above (from July). And it's more of that same spam - yes, spam is the correct term for it!

And "that spam," the associate added, "is showing up everywhere. Its presence suggests that Microsoft is dreadfully worried about competing productivity software suites like Calligra and LibreOffice. And that Microsoft is worried above all about the threat (to them) of a universal file format preventing forced upgrades through tiny, but incompatible, changes to the file format for productivity software."
