Half a Decade Without Social Control Media
It has been 3 years since I quit all social control media; prior to that, in 2020, in light of "cancel culture" becoming more apparent, I already quit participating in discussions there.
This was only hours ago:
A couple of hours ago we finished the series "Social Control Media as a Rapid Race to the Bottom" and now we'll focus a lot more on the OSI series. The above is from Facebook, which RMS (Richard Stallman) speaks against while maintaining semi-official presence in social control media.
It may feel like social control media gives extra audience but: 1) at what cost? 2) what kind of audience? Not all audience is desirable. The cost includes your time and people who dislike you (or hostile agencies) digging/mining for out-of-context 'dirt'.
Almost 10 years ago an explanation of what social control media had become was published by Pieter Hintjens. He explained many of the same things we're still seeing. Daniel Pocock warned about this approximately 7 years ago and he's still at it.
What to use instead of social control media? Use RSS readers. Here are some Atom/RSS URLs to add: techrights.org, tuxmachines.org, stallman.org, and danielpocock.com. █
