Disable 'Secure Boot' (If It Lets You)
This week: (also see We Could Dual-Boot Back in the 1990s, Why Has This Become So Difficult?)
Contrary to its name, 'Secure Boot' is not secure. It also seems like the "modern" firmware doesn't put you in control. People used to joke that even when you set Windows Update to disabled/off (toggled off), Microsoft simply ignored that configuration and applied updates regardless. In other words, that option or tickbox served no purpose other than to give you a false sense of control. Windows controlled you, not the other way around. That was like 25 years ago. Nothing has changed.
Has 'Secure Boot' become equally stubborn with some proprietary firmware? Worse yet, will computers sold with 'Secure Boot' as something you can disable update themselves to no longer allow that? Never say never. There's a new software release for Linux that can do that without even asking you. █
