Techrights the Name Turns 15
It's hardly a secret we used to go by the name Boycott Novell and focus on the Novell-Microsoft patent deal. Well, Novell got sold a decade and a half ago. The name (or brand name) did not survive. In 2010 Tracy (our sys admin, who is still in IRC 24/7 by the way) suggested some names and checked availability in the namespace. Eventually, after speaking with Richard Stallman as well, we went ahead with Techrights.org. Then, David Gerard reminded me to also register Techrights.com. Many people will enter the wrong address (compare nixos.org to nixos.com, but don't open the latter because it's NSFW).
In hindsight, Techrights.org was a good name because we're a non-profit and we focus on a broad range of tech issues, more so in relation to human rights. Dr. Stallman once said we'd serve as a good "Sentry" (citing the Jehovah's Witness publication), so we adopted that suggestion as well.
About 6 weeks from now we turn 19. 2 years ago we started New Techrights and exactly 2 weeks from now the FSF turns 40. █
