Why We Call Him Dr. Stallman
Dr. Stallman is giving a talk in Germany 3 hours from now. In Germany, one can be "Prof. Dr."
Stallman is no "Prof. Dr."; We say "doctor" because we think he deserves it, even if is attributed to many honorary doctorates.
Decades ago my uncle was offered an honorary doctorate, which he turned down; he said he had not done anything that truly merits a doctorate, it was just a way to use his name (maybe money) for him to wear some hat.
There are many kinds of doctorates; a week ago a neighbour asked us, "which one of you is the doctor?" (She assumed it meant medical doctor)
To better understand how RMS justifies his doctorates, as many people ask him about it, see: Am I Doctor Stallman?
He got at least 15 such titles and he says: "I do occasionally tell people that they don't need to call me Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Stallman." █
